Striker Ashley Robinson gets better with every game, Chertsey could not handle him all afternoon, he used his strength to out muscle two Chertsey defenders to set up Towns first goal, he juggled the ball from a cross into the box, before laying it back to Adam Confue, who fired in from twelve yards out to put Town in front, in the eleventh minute.
Credit must be given to Manager Darran Foster, who stuck with Robinson, when he first came to the club, it took a few weeks for Ashley to get back to full match fitness, after his arrival at the club, but his attacking abilities, are now making the Town a much more potent strike force!
The back four once again looked very strong, keeper Richard Morris only had one save to make in the first twenty minutes, having to hold on to the free kick, which bounced awkwardly in front on him.
The pitch was very difficult, every bounce taking the ball in a different direction!
Jamie Gould managed to push forward and Captain Guy Sanders never gave an inch. The midfield worked tirelessly all afternoon, Adam Confue was back to his best, and every player won their own personal battle with their opposing number.
Neil King, Robbie Thompson - Brown and Nat Liburd were always available in midfield and used the ball well. Liam Dolman took some needless abuse, from a fool in the crowd, but as always never put a foot or head wrong.
Kyle Cartwright was involved in the second goal, Kyle jumped high to head a Neil King corner against the crossbar, and the ball fell to Josh Blake, who neatly controlled the ball, before hitting the ball high into the top of the net, to give Town a two goal cushion, after just seventeen minutes.
Kyle Cartwright was involved in the third goal in the twenty seventh minute too, this time his shot was blocked by the legs of goal keeper Gary Ross, rebounding to Adam Confue who smashed the ball into the corner of the net.
Chertsey pulled a goal back in the twenty eighth minute from a corner, Daventry managed to clear a header from the line, but the ball rolled out to Mark Knight, who stroked the ball home, to give Chertsey some fruitless hope of getting back in to the match.
Ashley Robinson was responsible for the Towns fourth goal, right on half time, running through on goal, once again using his strength to push aside robust challenges; he was eventually brought down from behind, why the defender was not given a red card, only the referee will know, the second Chertsey defender was alongside him at best!
Nevertheless, Daventry were awarded a penalty, having missed several penalties in recent matches, it was important that Town capitalised on the opportunity to settle this tie, fortunately for Daventry Town, Jamie Gould was supremely confident, strolling up to hit the ball high to the left side of the goalkeeper Gary Ross, who managed to get a good hand on it, but Gould's kick had too much power and Town went in for their half time orange segments four goals to one up.
Adam Confue contributed to the final goal, a good ball from midfield, found the feet of Josh Blake, who dummied to the left of the keeper to take the ball round him and then hit the ball into the empty net, Blake was a real handful to the Chertsey back four all afternoon, because of his pace and enthusiasm.
If the team continue to play like this, we are in for a very exciting end to the season.
Daventry Town are now undefeated in their last five league games, scoring fourteen goals and conceding just five goals! Town have lost just one league match from their last nine league games played and are beginning to show some impressive form, in the final run – in of matches.
On Tuesday Daventry Town play Thatcham Town at Communications Park, Thatcham lost 5-1 at play – off challengers Burnham at the weekend, a similar victory for the Town would be excellent preparation for the visit of Burnham, to Communications Park next Saturday.
A final word must go to the Rugby Town captain Robbie Banks and Uxbridge Town player Chris Owens, who both suffered terrible injuries in their games on Saturday; Blake had a broken leg and was taken to hospital.
Both games were abandoned because of the injuries to the players, Royston were losing their game to a stunning David Kolydynski overhead kick, having had a player sent off earlier in the game, before the tragic accident occurred.
Daventry Town wish both players a speedy recovery, our thoughts and best wishes go out to both players and their clubs.
