Daventry suffer penalty miss agony

Daventry suffer penalty miss agony

JIM DAVIS

Daventry Town dropped two crucial league points at home to Aylesbury, after missing their third penalty in just two games, to cap a frustrating evening for the Purple Army.

Daventry were dominant for much of the match, particularly in the second half, but came up against an inspired goal keeper in Simeon Charles, and had very little luck in front of goal.
Daventry had the first effort on goal, a long ball from Ross Oulton found Scott Cross on the right, who centred the ball for Ashley Robinson, but a timely interception from an Aylesbury defender prevented Robinson from getting his shot on target.
In the tenth minute Scott Cross had a shot saved by the legs of keeper Simeon Charles, after a good passing move by Nat Liburd and Ashley Robinson, set up the former Northampton Town striker.
Aylesbury player/manager Craig Faulconbridge had a lucky escape when he lost possession of the ball to Scott Cross on the edge of his own penalty area, but Cross took too long over his shot and the keeper pushed his effort around the post for a corner.
In the fourteenth minute Robbie Brown also had a shot cleared off the line, after hitting the ball through a crowd of players, from a corner.
Aylesbury had a few opportunities themselves; Luke Abraham placed a free kick onto the head of Matarr Touray, whose header was saved by Richard Morris and another Abraham shot was deflected over the crossbar by an outstretched Liam Dolman foot.
The inform, Leon Osie, also put a curling shot over the crossbar, from outside the area. Goalkeeper Simeon Charles was having a Man of the match performance for Aylesbury, also making a brave save at the feet of Adam Confue, just before the half time whistle blew.
Daventry had a fantastic chance to take the lead, and as it turned out to take all three points, when Max Farreley was judged to have handled the ball in the area, unfortunately for Daventry, Captain Guy Sanders smashed his kick against the crossbar, our third penalty miss in two games! Daventry can`t afford to miss penalty kicks, four points have now been lost against Guildford and Aylesbury because of missed kicks, points which would have pushed us into the play off places and made our position much stronger.
Daventry began to exert a lot of pressure on the Aylesbury goalmouth, Richard Morris in the Daventry goal having very little to do in the second half, but the goal Daventry craved would not come, despite plenty of chances.
Adam Confue had a shot saved by Charles, when one on one with the keeper just after the hour and Ashley Robinson headed just wide of the post after winning a cross high in the air.
Substitute Ryan Howell, back in Daventry Purple, had his header brilliantly saved by Simeon Charles and Kyle Cartwright headed against the crossbar. Ryan Howell also tried to chip the keeper, only to see Charles save again.
Aylesbury had a strong penalty appeal turned down within minutes of the final whistle, Leon Osie being bundled over when through on goal, the referee waving away the loud appeals, but for Daventry Town to have lost this game would have been an injustice, the Town deserved to take all three points, on a more favourable evening we would have done so easily, by two or three goals.
Daventry Town must take all nine points from their next three games, away at Northwood next Saturday 12th, at home to Leighton Town next Tuesday 15th and at home again to strugglers North Greenford United on Saturday 19th January, if they are to seriously challenge for a promotion place!
