All the gear, and great ideas!

By Sandra Marshall

DRFC hosts the UKCC Level 1 Training - Coaching Children Rugby Union.

Over the course of two weekends recently, Deeside Rugby hosted the UKCC Level 1: Coaching Children Rugby Union training course. Both days included classroom discussion, held at Banchory Business Centre, and practical sessions at Woodend. Attendees included all five of the Deeside Micro coaches, two of the Deeside Mini coaches and we were very pleased to welcome Micro coaches from Aberdeen Grammar and Gordonian Pelicans. The course was led by the SRU's John Mann, who helped to create a lively, positive and fun environment.

Most of Day 2 was allocated to practical sessions, where all nine coaches had to lead a warm-up and training session that they had planned from learnings the previous week. John warned us to expect 'a lot of repetition' as each coach hashed out exercises from the previous week, but much to his delight, every coach had developed unique sessions that well and truly tested the fitness and skills of the rest of the delegates.

Final result: nine more qualified coaches in the North East (albeit two hobbling, one staved finger, and one who described themselves simply as 'broken'); new rugby friendships; a fantastic, open discussion and sharing of good practice across the coaching community; SRU Technical Blueprint and Core Principle of Play firmly embedded into the future of primary coaching at Deeside Rugby; and enough new game ideas to last an entire season!

Thanks to everyone involved for making it happen - organisers, hosts, club sponsors, course leader and all the newly qualified coaches - who all had great fun!
