The Reds went into todays relegation encounter with Handsworth Parramore Res knowing that defeat would send them into the drop zone however a battling 2-2 draw with the same opponents that beat United 1-0 only a week ago kept them outside the bottom 3.
The opening 20 minutes didn't produce a lot of goalmouth action with an effort from Steve Ellor after racing on to a lobbed pass from Mark Gedney and a speculative shot from the home sides Chris Samuels being the only threats to goal. On 22 minutes United took the lead, a free kick out on the right was sent over to the far post with Louis McKie heading the ball back across goal and Ashley Cantrill was on hand to sweep the ball home. The lead last only 5 minutes with the home side levelling matters with a goal that United ought to have done more to prevent, Parirs Dixon got possession about 20 yards out in acres of space and really should have been closed down but United stood off and he took the chance to send in a fierce shot which nestled in the bottom corner. Reds keeper Kyle Matthews was then called upon to make a superb save from the same player as once more he was allowed space to shoot after again not being closed down. Seconds before the break the home side went ahead with a calamitous goal from United's point of view, a ball played into the penalty area was being shepherded by Chris Haines and should have been a simple gather for keeper Matthews however with a breakdown as to who was doing what Haines nodded the ball back, Matthews failed to grasp the ball cleanly and as the ball bobbled clear the home side's Dixon fired the ball into goal despite the best efforts of Chris Haines to block the shot.
Only 5 minutes into the second period the Reds got level, a throw in down the left was picked up by Steve Ellor and his good control allowed him to play in Mark Gedney who slotted the ball into the goal from 18 yards. As far as goals that was the end of the scoring but there was still plenty of chances to add to that tally with the better chances falling to the home side as they fluffed a number of good chances to get back in front alongside some timely blocks from United defenders, United also survived a couple of goal mouth scrambles and that man Dixon rattled a post with a fierce shot. The Reds themselves also created a few decent chances with Steve Ellor hitting the woodwork with a header and Ashley Cantrill hitting a side foot volley just wide indeed Cantrill might have stolen all the points in the last seconds as Ellor raced down the right and he pulled the ball back to Cantrill who saw his shot sail just wide. The game ended with United grabbing a point to keep themselves outside the drop zone.
