Yet again United were forced to play an outfield player in goal with one keeper on holiday and none of the other 5 keepers signed on making themselves available with old boy Ainsley Finney agreeing to help out between the sticks. The game started with both sides probing but it was the visitors who took a 1-0 lead after 10 minutes, a break down the right from Council saw his cross reach Dickinson and he found himself some space to fire his side ahead. United then had a series of events that perhaps sums their season up as they created a number of chances but the scoreline remained blank, firstly Aiden Oakley fired in a terrific shot which hit the bar while Silas Collins saw 2 close range efforts hit the visiting keeper Lee, who new nothing about the stops and Steve Ellor got a bad bobble as he looked to pull the trigger and saw his shot spliced wide, Callum Black also fizzed a fierce drive just past the right upright. This bad luck came back to haunt the Reds as Penistone increased their lead right on half time, a run and low cross down their left saw the ball find its way to the far post leaving an easy tap in. 2-0 down at the break when things might have been so different.
It was the second period which saw the keeper problems bite United as they conceded 4 more goals all of which might have been avoided with a regular custodian between the sticks, one of which saw Brad Turner, in goal by this time take possession of the ball, drop it to his feet then pick it back up to concede a free kick and guess what Penistone scored from the resultant set piece. This should be in no way taken as criticism of either Brad or Ainsley, they are not keepers and helped the club out to the best of their ability. The one bright spot for United in the second half was Ainsley Finneys goal of the game, starting out in goal he was replaced by Brad Turner and went into an attacking position and upon taking possession out on the left he cut inside before taking a audacious strike on goal from 30 yards which curled beautifully inside the far post leaving the visiting keeper with no chance.
