After a 9-0 loss in the first game back in January United hoped for better things but this was not to be as Wombwell did the double over United leaving the Reds still in one of the relegation spots.
United have had keeper availability issues all season and yet again another keeper was to make his seasonal debut with Tom Blessed donning the gloves this time. United have a habit of conceding early goals and this was no different as a tony Mullen pass back put keeper under pressure and his clearance was picked up and swept home to give the visitors the advantage. Two other goals followed before the break, the first of these a volley that sailed over the keeper and dipped under the bar, goal 3 came when a cross from the left to the far post was headed back across goal and a Wombwell player was on hand to side foot home. United's only real threat during the half was a jack Vickers shot saved by the legs of Wombell keeper Crossland
The second period wasn't as bad in terms of goals with only one added to the Wombwell tally however United suffered 2 red cards as the referee allowed himself to be dictated to by a streetwise visiting team who chorus of complaints every time things did not go their way influenced the man in black. First the goal, a well worked moved down the right and Handcock skipped around a defender and slotted home. As far as the cards were concerned, the referee saw nothing wrong with a lunge by Jake Simon on Joe Hayden (I thought it was a yellow, United played wanted a red) however Sean Atkinson somehow saw a yellow when he ducked under the ball to win a throw in (what the referee saw only he will know), this was followed by a second yellow for a challenge and off he went. United then fell foul of some wind up tactics from a couple of visiting players and Josh Whittaker responded with a rather gentle lob of the ball at one of these players, an action that saw him get a straight red with the referee opting to use cards rather than any man management skills.
Not a good day for United because while they could do little against a better Wombwell side they fell foul to a referee who was not able to recognise the streetwise tactics that they also used.
