Though defeated this was a far better performance from United than they had put in in several weeks (the South Kirby win excepted) and they more than held their own against a team currently in 5th spot. Though the visitors looked to press United back a well marshalled defence, superbly led by Paul Mills held them at bay, Paul who has announced his intention to retire at the end of the season proved a solid rock as the team ensured the visitors created little and when they did the United keeper was able to make a number of saves. Unfortunately a rare moment of lapse just before the break gave Stocksbridge a clear chance and the ball for dispatched cleanly to give them the lead at the interval.
United raced out of the blocks in the second half and within 7 minutes had taken a 2-1 lead, firstly a superb shot from 30 yards by Josh Whittaker drew United level, taking possession out on the right he fired his shot across the keeper and the ball arrowed inside the far post. Steve Ellor then gave United the lead, a throw in inside the penalty area caused confusion and Ellor swivelled to fire the ball home. The visitors got level when a left wing cross towards the far post was steered back across goal and they had a player on hand to prod the ball home.
With time running out and United looking as if they might get a point a rare lapse in defence gave the visitors the chance to wrap up the points and they took this chance to seal the points leaving United thinking what might have been.
