The 35s were playing Thorncliffe FC for the 3rd time this season and remain unbeaten against the Sheffield side after an earlier 6-3 win and a 1-1 draw in their 2 league encounters. The game this time was in the 2nd round of the league cup and played on a soggy pitch at Old Road. The previous encounter was a bad tempered 1-1 draw however there were no shenanigans this time around as the 35s came out on top of a 10 goal game by 6-4.
Level at 2-2 after the first period with 2 Dean Light goals the team got on top after the break with Light going on to complete his treble and further goals from Steve Haines (2) and Lee Parkinson to leave the side on the top end of a 6-4 scoreline as they progressed into round 3.
It was a different story for the 45s though it had started so encouraging as they travelled to Wickersley Old Village who play in the top division. In this Topham Cup tie United set off like a train and surged into a 2-0 lead with goals from Steve Saunders and Wayne Burke however the home side managed to get themselves back into the game and take the lead at 3-2 before the break.
The second half saw a fairly even game however the hope side created the better chances and finally ended up 6-3 winners, Mark Smith grabbing United's 3rd. This result at least gives United a place in the Sid Butterfield cup, a competition they won last season after beating Old Edwardians 3-1 in last years final.
