On the back of the previous weeks defeat against Telford Raiders Derby City welcomed Coventry Dragons to Haslam’s Lane. Plenty of work had been done on the training ground that week to repair some of the faults from that match.
However Derby’s performance in the first 15 minutes were reminiscing of that match as sloppy tackling and communication allowed the Dragons Winger and Centre to cross for converted tries. 12 points down before the first quarter was complete was not a good sign!
Second quarter saw the home side finally awaken, tries from Scrum Half Rob Brown, Centre Jack Pearce and replacement Lee Steemson with Brown adding the extras to the last try. This nudged Derby ahead by two points after 30 minutes. The final ten minutes was nip and tuck and half time score Derby City 14 Coventry Dragons 12.
Half time discussion out of the way, all plans in place and all of a sudden the Dragons spoil it again, discipline from the home side along with crisp running lines allowed Full Back Clive Jackson and the Dragons Loose Forward to score with second with the extras. Derby were again trailing this time by eight points.
The last fifteen minutes belonged to City. A cheeky try by Hooker Jon Doughty started the ball rolling converted by Brown, Brown then added his own try after collecting his kick over the Coventry defence to score between the posts two minutes later. Then with only two minutes remaining Full Back Lewis Thompson took the ball deep in the Derby half off Half Back Lee Chapman drifted past three defenders to score just right of the posts. Converted by Brown.
Full time Derby City 32 Coventry Dragons 22. Man of the match goes to Rob Brown who also amassed 16 points.
Next week sees Derby take an experimental side to newly formed Buxton.
