Travelling over 50 miles for a game of rugby, probably the hottest days of the year and with only 14 players it was always going to be an exceptional ask to get anything against the runaway league leaders.
Conservation of energy was always going to be difficult with only Mike Humprey as a replacement however Derby City decided they had nothing to lose today and if completed the basics correctly then some rewards may appear.
Northampton had different ideas as a well drilled powerful set of forwards advanced at will and scored three tries within the first 15 minutes. Other teams may have folded however the visitors immediately took possession after ill-discipline from a Demons player. Centre Jack Pearce took the ball from 15 yards out and broke through to score with three players surrounding him. Conversion was missed by Pearce.
The rest of the first half was dominated by the Demon’s as they scored a further three converted tries. Half time Northampton Demons 32 Derby City 4.
Tiring and being constantly caught out with the step back by the advancing players Derby conceded a further converted try but created the perfect remedy as Pearce from short distance took a pop pass to cross for his second. Converted by Joe Frobisher.
The four tries that Northampton scored in the last twenty minutes was down to shear tiredness of the Derby players combined with the skill and directness of the home forwards.
Final score Northampton Demons 64 Derby City 10. Man of the match was given to all 14 that had travelled with Jack Pearce, Mike Humprey and Will Smith getting a special mention.
Derby did extremely well considering all the circumstances against a team that are running away with the league, with 20 players the score would have possibly been more respectable but will never know. Nottingham Outlaws next week away one of the matches everybody has been looking forward to!!
