The game was played in constant rain from start to finish making any flowing rugby almost impossible. The early part of the game was characterised by a series of knock-ons and scrums. In those early exchanges Wheatley had the upper hand. However, it was Didcot that opened the scoring. Pretty much the first time Didcot got its backline into the game saw Josh Witts break through the Wheatley defence to sprint half of the length of the pitch to score. Josh converted his own try. 0-7 to Didcot.
Ten minutes later Didcot again got the ball to the backline, this time Dan Hall went over to score. The conversion was missed.Didcot held a 0-12 lead until just before half time when after a series of errors, Didcot conceded ground to Wheatley and their forwards barrelled over to score. The try was converted leaving a half time score of 7-12 to Didcot.
As with the previous week, Didcot came out more determined in the second half. A quick tap penalty by Jake Dawson saw him take the Wheatley defence by surprise to score in the corner. The try was converted by Josh Witts. Score 7-19. Didcot kept up the relentless pace and were rewarded with a second Dan Hall try, again converted by Josh Witts to make the score 7-26.
With the rain not letting up, the final scoring passage of the game came in the 65th minute when Dan Hall completed his hatrick of tries. Josh Witts converted.
Final Score
Wheatley 7 Didcot 33
What was clear was that we left a few more points out on the pitch and must improve their accuracy over the coming weeks. Nevertheless, a bonus point win in those conditions was very welcomed.
