Determined Didcot Claim Crucial Three Points

Dogged display earns Didcot three points

Didcot Town produced a dogged, determined performance to come away from Melksham Town with the three points on Monday evening.

Goals from Jenson Wright and Connor Barrett in each half had Didcot in control and despite a late penalty and Melksham throwing everything at the railwaymen, they withstood the onslaught to claim the three points.

Didcot went ahead on 13 minutes. Connor Barrett, on his 100th appearance for the club, saw his effort from the edge of the area deflect off Jenson Wright. The ball looped over the keeper and in off the post.

Melksham threw wave after wave of attack at Didcot.  Luke Carnell and Adam Learoyd were colossal in the defence, clearing most high balls that came into the danger area.  When the defence was breached,  Leigh Bedwell was in fantastic form in the Didcot goal with a couple of breathtaking saves and when he was beaten,  Owen Smith was there to clear an effort off the line.

Didcot were relieved to hear the half-time whistle, having withstood the pressure.

The second half started in the same vain and the hosts thought they had levelled on 56 minutes only for the referee to rule out the effort.

Didcot then caught Melksham with a sucker punch.  A quick break saw Luke Preen send Connor Barrett away and the winger drilled his low right foot shot under the keeper.

Melksham came back at Didcot,  continuing their onslaught on the Didcot defence, but they stood firm,  restricting the hosts to few meaningful efforts on target after the break.

Didcot were still looking dangerous on the break and Preen and Barrett combined again, this time the keeper saving the effort from Barrett.

The hosts were given a lifeline with ten minutes remaining when they were awarded a penalty after Adam Learoyd had been judged to have fouled the Melksham striker. Despite going the right way,  Leigh Bedwell couldn't keep out the penalty.

It was one-way traffic in the closing stages, with Melksham camped in the Didcot half.  Despite the pressure and ten minutes of added time, Didcot held on for a crucial win.

Player of the Match - Luke Carnell
It's hard to narrow it down but Luke Carnell gets this one just ahead of Adam Learoyd. Headers, blocks and clearances, he provided them all.

A great team performance with so many candidates for player of the match.
