Didcot emerge victorious in the South Oxfordshire Derby thanks to goals from Morgan and Lance Williams

Didcot earned the bragging rights in a tense south Oxfordshire FA Cup derby against Abingdon United.
The game will probably be best remembered for a violent thunder storm that skirted the Loop Meadow and ensured much of the first half was played in torrential rain. Under those circumstances players on both sides deserve credit for producing a game full of endeavour but understandably lacking in quality.
The home side adjusted well to the tricky conditions and just about had the upper hand in the first half. Lance Williams had an effort which flew narrowly wide and Pablo Haysham brought a decent stop from United keeper James Foster.
Leon Bird had a great opportunity for the visitors midway through the half but volleyed over. But moments later Abingdon did take the lead when Matt Biddle converted from close range following good work from Ben Whitehead.
United’s celebrations had only just finished when Didcot levelled. A speculative shot from Morgan Williams looked to have been easily gathered by Foster but he lost control of the ball and was horrified to see it bobble over the line and into the net.
Brian Bowles then tested Foster with a stinging drive before James Clark also came close for the home side with a shot that grazed the post but it was all square at the interval.

Abingdon’s best spell of the game came after the break as the weather finally started to improve. Bird mis-controlled the ball when clear on goal and then Toby Newell came close with a powerful shot that keeper Marco Belloli did well to palm away.
As the second period continued Didcot did start to look more threatening and eventually it was the home side who grabbed what turned out to be a winner. On 73 minutes a corner from Morgan Williams was headed home by Lance Williams into the far corner of the net.
Foster pulled off an excellent save to prevent Morgan Williams from adding a third while at the other end Curtis Angell fired just wide.
In stoppage time the visitors thought they had earned a replay when Angell slotted home but he was deemed offside in what looked a tight decision.
Didcot now travel to Windsor in the First Qualifying Round.
