Early Williams goal not enough for Railwaymen

Didcot Town fell to their first defeat in 5 league games on Saturday with a disappointing 2-1 loss at Coleshill Town. Manager Andy Ballard had to go into the game with an incredible 7 players missing which meant Didcot had no recognised full back available meaning Ollie Thomas was the man given the nod to fill in at the back.

The Railwaymen began well as Gregg Hackett put a dangerous ball into the box that was just about scrambled away by the home defence as Adam Learoyd was lurking to try and bundle the ball in. Didcot didn't have to wait too much longer to find the net however as on 8 minutes Brett Gardner forced a corner on the right hand side. Hackett trotted across to take it and his low driven corner kick found the head of Lance Williams who thumped home his 1st goal of the season to put Didcot ahead.

it was seemingly going swimmingly for the Railwaymen as they knocked the ball about confidently on the 4G surface but their insistence on playing out from the back was to be their downfall as Thomas horribly under hit a back pass to Bedwell which enabled Liam Molesworth a free run in on goal, he rounded the stranded Bedwell and rolled the ball into the unguarded net and Coleshill had an unlikely equaliser. From this moment however the game changed, Didcot rocked by the calamitous nature of the equalising goal never recovered and Coleshill took control of the game. they should have gone ahead when a good ball in from the right found Sandhu no more than 10 yards out but the forward blazed over with the goal at his mercy.

Half Time Coleshill 1-1 Didcot

Those of a red and white persuasion would have hoped the half time break brought more than the monsoon deluge that hit the Pack Meadow Stadium and an improvement in their side but it wasn't to be. Almost immediately after the restart David Murphy played a sloppy pass on the edge of his own box allowing Molesworth another great chance but Bedwell was there to rescue the visitors with a fine save with his legs. Moments later however Didcot unsurprisingly fell behind, Carnell and Learoyd between them didn't deal with a bouncing long ball and Molesworth was able to capitalise, shrugging off his marker he then slotted beyond Bedwell to put Coleshill in front.

the game then descended into an even scrappier contest, Didcot wounded and with limited options just couldn't get their attacking players into the game and Coleshill happy with their lead sat deeper playing on the counter attack and making the game as bitty as possible. in a last throw of the dice Ballard introduced himself and Aaron Woodley as Didcot went longer trying to force something out of the game. The only remote chance they did create was in the dying moments as Carnell got on the end of a long throw but his header was easily saved. If anything Coleshill came closest to extending the lead, an effort from distance was deflected onto the post and Bedwell had to save well low down in the dying seconds as Didcot fell to defeat.

A bad day at the office for the Railwaymen who will have been disappointed with their performance overall and having not capitalised on their early goal were made to pay for defensive errors by a hard working Coleshill side.
