Newcastle University 1s Match Report

Didsbury Greys 1s 0:3 Newcastle University 1s.

Following on from some solid Pre-season   performances and with a recent 5:3 win against Sale Ladies (friendly), the team were feeling well prepared and positive ahead of our first league match of the season.
Newcastle University Ladies 1s arrived looking keen and an opening goal in the first few minutes of the game proved that they were also determined to get their season off to a strong start. A pass back to the Greys defence was intercepted by a Newcastle player who capitalised on the opportunity, putting the ball in the back of the net.
Greys realised that they would need to organise themselves quickly in order to stay in the game. However, an unlucky short corner clearance was lifted into the path of a Newcastle player who volleyed it into the net, narrowly missing Nic Jeffries' face as she defended the line.
Unfortunately for Greys, there was one more goal come before half-time with a  counter attack leading to a two on one situation in the D. 
When the half-time whistle went, the Greys girls made their way to the side line. Nic gave her team talk and Racheal boosted morale with some positive energy! We may have been 3-0 down but we weren't giving up!
The second half was a far more disciplined and organised display by Greys. Despite their efforts, Newcastle were left frustrated by the tight marking across the pitch and their inability to score any more goals.
Despite the scoreline, Greys had some good chances in the opposing D. Kim came closest with a 1 on 1 with the keeper after beating the Newcastle defender.
Although the outcome wasn't what we'd hoped for, the team effort and attitude was fantastic and has left a relatively new team with plenty of positives to take forward into the new season!
