A typical, well-fought encounter between local rivals that was competitive throughout but went in favour of Dinnington as they made the most of their chances.

A typical, well-fought encounter between local rivals that was competitive throughout but went in favour of Dinnington as they made the most of their chances.

The game was only three minutes old when Dinnington moved the ball from a lineout broke tackles and fed Awly Trueman on the wing to run in from half way. James Silkstone converted. Wath responded almost straight away and got over the Dinnington line only to be denied by a double movement. A break by Dinnington took them to the Wath twenty-two but they knocked on and an excellent clearance kick took play back into the visitors’ half where a Dinnington clearance kick was charged down and collected for Wath to claim an unconverted try. The game then became end to end for a time as firstly, Dinnington were intercepted as they pressed the home defence and then Wath had the visitors defending five metres from their own line. Dinnington turned the ball over and broke downfield only for Wath to recover and win a scum close to their line with some excellent

cover defence. With fifteen minutes of the half to go Dinnington found a way through as Oliver Williamson looped round to find space on the wing and score. Five minutes from half time, Dinnington took a quick tap at a penalty to put Wath on the back foot and Corey Differ came up in support to score. Silkstone converted to send Dinnington into the break 19-5 ahead.

The opening plays of the second half saw both sides giving it a go with Wath in particular determined to get back into the game. Ten minutes into the half Dinnington came close to scoring but were held up over the line. Two minutes later they had a player sin-binned but Wath, instead of putting pressure on their opponents, missed touch with the penalty and Trueman ran the ball back to score. Silkstone converted. Dinnington did well to keep Wath out while a man down but almost immediately they were back to full strength they scored again as Jay Differ forced his way over the line after good work by Liam Hopkins. This time Josh Valente converted. Wath, to their credit, were still competing but, five minutes later, Dinnington made the game safe when Antony Green stole the ball as Wath attacked from their own twenty-two, broke several tackles and scored. Valente converted. The last ten minutes of the game were played out in midfield.
