In the third interview with key personnel within the club we catch up with Doncaster Demons Gemma French, our Director of Women's Rugby.

How long have you been involved with Demons / Phoenix / rugby and in what roles?

Twenty years (two before renaming as Demons and eighteen after) as a player, captain, team manager and now Director of Women's Rugby

What has been your Demons / Phoenix / rugby highlight?

I would like to mention two, winning leagues and playing at a level two below Premiership, the camaraderie and celebrations were great. Also running a women’s team for 18 years, this is something to be very proud of.

Considering the pandemic - did you think we would have gone nearly a year without any rugby?

No. I thought some shape or form would be allowed with strict testing in place and maybe a 'proving' period.

What have you missed most about no rugby this season?

Being outside with like-minded people in respects of playing, coaching, physical well-being, supporting our club from the side lines and feeling part of something.

Would you like to think we will see some Demons / Phoenix rugby before the end of this season?

I would like to think that yes, but I feel this this may not be the case and that saddens me.

Do you have any tips for surviving lockdown?

If you cannot escape physically, escape mentally, I love to delve into a book.
Try something new, do not be afraid, it is not like anyone is going to see you!

Have you baked any banana bread or starred on Tik-Tok?

No. Bananas do not go with anything.

Who do you fancy winning this year’s Six Nations and why?

I want England to win obviously, but I think France will edge it. They have a playing flare at the moment and are easily capable of magical rugby, which pains me to say.

Should the Lions South Africa series go ahead this year? If so in what format and where?

I understand the importance to development of this tour, but I cannot see how this would be acceptable or fair to all other rugby players who are not elite. People cannot fly out or play organised sports because we are trying to stop the spread of COVID. I would much rather see rugby start up again at grassroots.

Thank you, Gemma, any final thoughts?

It has been a challenging time for everyone, but if you are reading this and feel low/alone, reach out. Do not be afraid to take that first and most difficult step. We, the Phoenix/Demons family are here to support anyone in need. Especially at time like this which is so demanding of mental health and well-being.
