Phoenix returned to Castle Park after two away matches to face a Roundhegians side who had beaten them in the return fixture earlier in the season.

As the league table shows, Roundhegians are a limited outfit however with them battling to avoid relegation Phoenix knew that they would be determined to take something out of the game.

For Phoenix, the backs remained unchanged from last weeks impressive victory at Ripon, whilst in the forwards prop Tyrone 'C**t-Zone' Fisher replaced Liam Parsons, Dan Morris added his considerable bulk to the front row in place of travelling hooker James Watson, Greg Neill returned to the second row to replace Nick Byrne who reverted to 6 in place of Adam Tamanis who dropped to the bench and Phoenix stalwart Nick Germaine returned at 7 in place of the unavailable Carey Thomas.

Once again Phoenix got off to a flying start, and once again it was number 8 Ollie Clarke to the fore as he broke off a scrum 20 metres out and used his pace to round the 'Hegians defence for a converted try after only 3 minutes.

Phoenix continued to press and a penalty from just inside the opposition half was well converted by scrum-half Dan Storey. Only a few minutes later and Phoenix were on the scoreboard again, as some nice hands from Morris and Byrne sent Fisher crashing into the Hegians midfield. Quick ball allowed Phoenix to fire the ball out to the wing where an overlap was created for Jordan Ajimati to run in from 15 metres for another converted try.

With the score at 17-0 after only ten minutes it looked as though Phoenix could run away with the match, however the visitors re-grouped and after a spell of possession their danger-man at fly half stepped his way through some scrappy defence for a converted try under the sticks.

Both sides then traded penalties before Fisher was sent to the sin-bin for an indiscretion on the Phoenix 5 metre line, allowing Dan Horrocks to make his 1st XV debut. And he was required straight away as Roundhegians opted for a scrum from the resulting penalty, but great work from the Phoenix forwards saw their seven man scrum repel the eight 'Hegians forwards.

Despite being down to 14 men, Phoenix worked their way back up the field and once again created an overlap out wide, and despite his best efforts to butcher the opportunity captain Chris Conway eventually managed to ground the ball over the line for another try.

The half ended with the scrum halves on both sides trading penalties to leave the score at 28-13.

As they did in the first half, Phoenix started the second half in the ascendency and after only 5 minutes they had a chance to extend their lead as centre Craig Deakin used his strength to force his way over the line with two defenders on his back, only to drop the ball as he was about to ground it. However, Phoenix were not to be denied and shortly afterwards flanker Nick Byrne scored the bonus-point try.

To their credit Roundhegians never gave up and if anything they enjoyed more possession and territory in the second half, aided in part by another Phoenix sin-bin, this time back row Ollie Clark was the one contributing £10 of his match-fee.

On the rare occasions that Phoenix did enjoy some possession they looked threatening, and perhaps should have scored more than they did. First flanker Nick Byrne ignored a two man overlap by somehow throwing a bounce pass to himself, lock Joe Horrocks also ignored an overlap and instead attempt a futile chip-and-chase and then Roundhegians substitute winger tackled his opposite man without the ball to prevent an almost certain try and earn himself 10 minutes in the bin. The resulting penalty was kicked to the corner and after securing the lineout Phoenix's horizontally challenged fly half Jono Storey barrelled over for a converted try.

Eventually Roundhegians possession was rewarded as with almost the final 2 plays of the game they scored two unconverted tries, the first a well finished off effort and the second the result of a breakaway in midfield, as Phoenix coffed up possession with Matt Fisher stood in his favourite zone on the pitch, head butting the ball into the hands of the grateful 'Hegians flanker who trotted over from 30 metres out to make the final score 40-23.

Despite taking maximum points from the match Phoenix felt that the margin of victory could, and certainly should, have been greater. Next week will surely be a much sterner test against high flying South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley.
