Phoenix once again showed an improvement from the previous week to end Yarnbury’s winning start to the season with a 20-13 victory.

The squad for Saturday’s fixture showed a number of changes from the previous week. With Andy Ellis’ hand in pot Craig Deakin was moved up from full back to centre to partner Ollie Vidgeon, his place at full back filled by David Oakley. Impressive performances in the 2nd XV meant Dan Greenslade and Richard Greaves took over on the wings replacing Carey Thomas who was away on Holiday and Tom Cooper who took his place on the bench.

Phoenix were quickly into their stride with Ryan Peacey surging over from 10 metres out after only 4 minutes – the conversion was missed by Richard Greaves. Yarnbury replied soon after with a well struck penalty from their experienced fly half Steve Riley. 5-3

The contest at this stage was an even one with Yarnbury looking dangerous with some threatening breaks from their outside backs and Phoenix taking control of things through the middle of the park. Defences however remained on top until the 33rd minute when Peacey struck again, this time benefitting from his packs power and organisation as a penalty went to the corner and a well executed catch and drive guided the number 8 to the line. Again the conversion was missed 10-3

With half time approaching Yarnbury reduced the deficit to 4 points again through the boot of fly half Steve Riley. The sides went in at the break with the scores at 10-6.

Unfortunately the 1st half also witnessed 2 serious looking facial injuries as opposite wingers Dan Greenslade and Chris Flowers competed bravely for the high ball clashing heads in the process. Both men had to leave the field and were taken to hospital for treatment, Doncaster Phoenix wish a speedy recovery to both of them.

The opening 25 minutes of the 2nd period were competed as keenly as the 1st with both teams looking capable of winning the game, the next score was vital.

On 65 minutes Craig Deakin sped through a gap in the away side’s defensive line to have a clear run in to the line from 20 metres out to score what proved to be the crucial try of the game. This time the conversion was successful to give Phoenix an important 17-6 lead.

With the clock running down Yarnbury’s response again came quickly, as their impressive 2nd row Henry Griffiths, who was a thorn in Phoenix’s side all day, touched down for a converted try following a spell of pressure. 17-13.

A frantic final 10 minutes ensued with both teams pushing for the win; Phoenix chances looked to have improved when the Yarnbury 12 was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle on Deakin. From the resulting penalty Phoenix were able to push play deep into Yarnbury territory where, on 80 minutes, following a series of forward drives they were awarded a further penalty allowing Deakin to secure the win with a successful kick at goal. 20-13.

This was a hard fought win for Phoenix against a Yarnbury side who competed well in most area’s of the pitch.

Phoenix are at home again next Saturday as they take on Moortown. Kick off is at 3pm.
