Doncaster Phoenix fell to their first home defeat of the season as South Yorkshire rivals Dinnington deservedly won a close fought game 15-13.

An even first half saw Dinnington enjoy the best of the early exchanges, and after only 5 minutes the visiting fly-half Jonny West put Dinnington in front with a simple penalty. Shortly afterwards another penalty was pushed wide, however this was quickly followed up by the first try of the game. A missed tackle in midfield allowed the impressive Dinnington flanker Ryan Donnelly to make a break deep into the Phoenix 22. He was brought down just short but managed to get the offload away to the supporting John Stimpson who crashed over for the try, converted by fly-half Jonny West.

Aided by a well-functioning lineout stealing several throws from Dinnington, the home side then came back into the game. A Storey penalty got the home side on the board, and after another spell of pressure was met with strong Dinnington defence, a scrum on the visitors 5 metre line set up the platform for number 8 Chris Planchant to pick up and hold off a tackle to go over on the right. Dan Storey’s conversion evened up the scores at 10-10.

The remainder of the half was dominated by defence, a couple of half-breaks from both sides came to nothing and the final act of the half saw a tough penalty attempt by Storey from wide on the right come back off the post.

Phoenix began the second half on the front foot, and after just two minutes Storey put the home side in front with a well struck drop goal. 13-10.

As had been the story of the first half though, defence continued to be the order of the day and Dinnington worked their way back into the game. A period of pressure in the home half resulted in a scrum on the Doncaster 22. Quick ball from the scrum allowed the visitors to work an overlap and their centre Ollie Rodgers showed good strength to go over on the left for an unconverted try.

With the score now 15-13 Phoenix came back in the final 10 minutes looking to work an opportunity for Storey to kick a vital 3 points. First a long-range drop goal drifted wide, and then a promising position in the Dinnington 22 was surrendered as Phoenix gave away a penalty. However, with the very last play of the game a Dinnington player gave away a penalty just inside his own half, Storey struck the ball well however it just drifted wide of the post and Dinnington cleared the ball to claim a deserved victory.

With other results proving just how tough this division is Phoenix dropped to second position, 3 points behind new leaders Wath. Next week sees the long journey to North Ribblesdale for what is sure to be another tough test for Peacey’s men as they look to bounce back.
