Dorking Cricket is saddened to announce the death of former Club Captain and Life Vice President John Jones on the evening of Sunday 24th February 2019.
During his professional life John was on the books for Surrey County Cricket Club in the summer and was a professional footballer for Millwall Football club during the off season in the winter.
John retired from professional sport and joined DCC during the 70s and was both a captain for our Saturday 1stXI and 2ndXI’s in the ‘Surrey County Cricket League’ (a forerunner of what is now known as The Surrey Championship), for those interested in a partial snapshot of his playing stats for Dorking CC, they can be found here. John was an excellent all-rounder and even better fielder and could be regularly found at short leg captaining his sides, his playing ability of cricket was of a high standard and he could either bowl pace or spin balls and could defend his crease batting left handed, a wonderful player for DCC.
Later, after he had hung up is pads for the last time, John was a still a regular down at Pixham, were he would eagerly watch the colts of our future learn and have fun being taught the sport he loved so much. At the weekends he would watch Dorking play over the hedge from his living room and join the senior players for a beer or two after the days play.
He was made an honorary Life Vice President for DCC due to his services to the club and cricket in the surrounding area and will be sorely missed by us all.
Our thoughts are with Penny and his family at this time, who have asked to have some time to reflect on John’s passing over the next few days.
Details of the service will be announced by the family in due course.
