The Drifters U16 team, playing in their 3rd Plate Final in as many years won a hard fought game 22-12 against a strong Aylesbury team.
After being on the back foot for most of the opening encounters, Drifters took the lead with openside Barnaby David touching down out wide after a lightning break up the field. Alex Tearle could not add the extras out wide. 5-0
Aylesbury fought their way back in to the match and took the lead in the 28th minutes with a close range charge. The conversion was good.5-7.
Within 4 minutes Drifters regained the lead. A cultured low chip over a ruck by Rory Brady was collected superby by Tomos Miller who scored in the corner. Alex Tearle adding the extras bouncing it off the crossbar.
After 52 minutes Aylesbury found a way to level the game, exploiting a numerical advantage as Drifters were reduced to 13 men with Aylesbury enjoying 14 on the field. The try was scored but the conversion was missed 12-12.
This Drifters side is a determined outfit and again hit back within 5 minutes of conceding a try. Panic ensued in the Aylesbury defence when a Rory Brady box kick was eventually collected but the Drifters back row arrived with strength and forced the ball loose. Tomos Miller reacted quickest to scoop up the loose ball and touchdown out wide for his second try. 17-12
5 minutes later the game was put to bed with 8 minutes remaining. A dropped ball after a heavy tackle in midfield resulted in the ball bouncing up for Karl Quartey who collected well and outpaced the chasing Aylesbury players to score in the corner. The extras were narrowly missed again but the game was won.
Drifters emptied the bench and the fresh legs and huge desire to contribute reulted in a comfortable closing to the game.
