Under 13's Win North Midlands Plate at Stourbridge RFC (27th April 2014)

There is an ‘unwritten rule’ that says that we will always have the toughest group at this event and this year was no exception!!

First up were Bridgnorth who beat us by one try to nil in the group stages last year. We certainly couldn’t afford our usual tournament ‘slow start’ and thankfully we were ‘switched on’ from the first whistle. Commitment and tackling was first class and our line was kept in tact whilst we scored 3 tries of our own – a great start and with it a guaranteed second place in the group with Bees having already beaten Bridgnorth as well.

Our old foes Birmingham Solihull Bees were next and this was a fantastic game of rugby by two well matched teams on the day. After the drubbing handed out to us at the end of February I think the Bees were expecting a stroll but we had other ideas. A step up again in physicality and commitment from the first game meant that we stood toe to toe with our opponents and it really could have gone either way. In reality a couple of dropped passes cost us two try scoring opportunities after we’d applied relentless pressure on their line whilst Jakob was tackled by their last defender after a storming run. Fine margins in such a short, close match and our ‘luck’ was summed up when we tried to force the play late on and were intercepted for a breakaway try with the last play.

Bees ‘reward’ for beating us and winning the group was a Cup Semi Final against the eventual winners Worcester whilst our second place took us into the Plate Semi Final against Kidderminster.

We now took to the field as a team who were by now scenting silverware to end the season on a high. Commitment was superb and Kiddy were simply blown away in a ruthless performance 43 – 0.

Our Plate Final opponents were the hosts, Stourbridge who had a big set of forwards. We played some decent rugby and when it all came together and we moved it wide away from their pack we scored tries – it’s a simple game really! We again kept our line in tact with some great, committed tackling and with a solid defence anything is possible!

We therefore finished our season with a 24 – 0 win and some silverware!! It was pleasing to see several players pick up their first trophy in Droitwich colours, whilst it maintains our ‘record’ of winning something every season since we were under 7’s!!

Thank you to Alan for bringing along the gazebo which was very useful when we had a couple of heavy showers during the morning and to all the parents for your support of the team on Sunday and throughout the season.
