Cookley Sports Ladies 2 v 1 Droitwich Spa Ladies

Cookley Sports Ladies 2 v 1 Droitwich Spa Ladies
Sunday 28th September 2021
Droitwich Spa Ladies travelled to Cookley Sport Ladies to continue their League programme.
Droitwich started the brighter, putting Cookley under pressure and creating a couple of half chances that they were unable to convert. However, it was Cookley who came the closest, when after 10 minutes a cross shot hit the Droitwich cross bar and sailed to safety. The game was now becoming more balances with both sides playing some good football. Unfortunately for Droitwich, after 15 minutes, Cookley were awarded a free kick on the right about 25 yards out. The kick appeared to be harmlessly heading to the keeper, but unfortunately, a lapse of concentration resulted in the ball finding it’s way into the net. 1-0. The half continued with both sides competing well, resulting in a very enjoyable end to end encounter. After 40 minutes after some good work by Ruth Huly and Aimee Ward, Izzie Cale slip a telling ball to Aimee Ward who struck a hard shot high into the Cookley net. 1-1. The final minutes of the half continued to deliver good football from both sides, but without further score. Half Time 1-1.
The second half started with more of the same, with both sides entertaining the crowd. However, after only 5 minutes of the restart, Droitwich captain and commanding centre back, Lucy Boswell, picked up and injury and had to come off for some treatment. This seemed to cause Droitwich some concerns at the back and Cookley started to take more control with Droitwich playing more on the break. Cookley continued to press, but Droitwich were resilient. In fact, it was Droitwich who nearly broke the deadlock, when after 80 minutes Aimee Ward collected the ball in a central position, about 25 yard out and struck a delightful shot that looked as if it was sailing in until the Cookley keeper flew to her left to complete an excellent save. With the game coming to a close and a draw looking inevitable, Cookley ventured down the right and a cross into the goal area was unfortunately fumbled into the goal. 2-1. Droitwich strived to get back on level terms in the closing stages but Cookley held out. Final Score 2-1.

Droitwich Manager Mark Solloway was a little disappointed with the result but not with the performance. “We worked hard throughout and we are starting to play some good football. We do need to concentrate more at times but we will get there. It is early days and this is a side in transition. We can not fault their effort and reward will surely come”.
Droitwich’s next game is away to Knowle Ladies in the League on Sunday 10th October 2021.
