Dronfield got their season off to a flier with a strong performance away at their neighbours Chesterfield.
The first half was a tight battle in very wet conditions but despite this Dronfield came out and played much the better rugby. The forwards produced a strong all round display working hard to secure ball, punch holes in the hosts defence, and look to bring their backs into play with good offloads. As the half wore on Dronfield’s backs came more and more into the game with good handling and utilising the space out wide, unfortunately with the wet conditions came the inevitable knock-ons and a scoreline that probably didn’t reflect how well Dronfield had started.
The second half saw Dronfield dominate the game with the forwards immense tackling and power constantly pushing their hosts further and further back into their own half. This power up front allowed the backs to control the game and with accurate handling and excellent support play the gaps started to open up and three quick fire tries saw Dronfield comfortably lead. With Dronfield’s all round play causing their hosts problems it was only a ‘number’ of penalties given against the boys and three disallowed tries that prevented the margin of win from not being bigger. An excellent all round performance with the boys working hard until the very last minute and importantly sticking together when they needed to.
A special mention to Jacob and Thomas who were playing their first games for the Stags. Jacob recently joined from Chesterfield and put in a good all round performance against his former team and was definitely happy with the win! Thomas was playing his first ever game of rugby and worked hard out on the wing with some strong runs.
Player of the match was a difficult one as there were numerous contenders, however Oliver H got the nod for his work in turning over so much ball from the opposition.
