PENALTIES GALORE AS HAMLET LIFT THE CHARITY SHIELD

Paula Griffin

On Tuesday evening, we won the Isthmian Charity Shield with a 3-1 victory here against FAVERSHAM TOWN.

DULWICH HAMLET 3 FAVERSHAM TOWN 1
Tuesday 17th September 2013
Isthmian Charity Shield

A feature of the match was that three of the four goals came from penalties. Neither side was at full strength, but spectators still enjoyed a competitive and entertaining match, which could have gone either way. The early exchanges were very even, with each team attacking in turn. Ahmed Deen, still searching for his first Hamlet goal, missed an excellent chance when he miscued his close-range shot after Marc-Anthony Okoye had nodded a corner back across goal. Then, a minute later, Phil Wilson came to our rescue, as he did on several occasions during the evening, when Faversham's Renford Tenyue was dean through on goal. We opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Ellis Green was brought down in the box by Michael Jenner and Ian Daly buried the resultant spot-kick. Phil Wilson was kept busy, denying Danny Hockton on the edge of his box before turning behind a cross-shot from Darren Marsden. At the other end, Marcel Henry-Francis nodded wide after a good run and cross from Abdul Mansaray, and Marc-Anthony Okoye headed a deep corner from Ellis Green against the outside of the post. There were also other near misses at both ends.

Play continued to ebb and flow after the interval. In the 59th minute, after Ellis Green's first cross from the left led to a couple of shots being blocked, the winger had another try and this time his pinpoint cross was headed home at the back post by a diving Kevin James. Faversham reduced the arrears on 71 minutes when Tenyue was felled in the box by Marc-Anthony Okoye and Wayne Wilson blasted the penalty past his namesake. However, just two minutes later, we were awarded another spot-kick for a foul on Ethan Pinnock and this time Marcel Henry-Francis made no mistake from the 12-yard mark. Faversham never gave up and pressed strongly during the closing stages, Phil Wilson making a remarkable point-blank save from Tenyue and Kieren Oliver firing just over the bar.
