Another day and another cup game for the Hamlet, as they kickstart their latest quest to win a first London Senior Cup since 2004 with a visit of Athletic Newham to Champion Hill.
Our visitors play their football three steps below the Hamlet in the footballing pyramid, plying their trade in the Essex Senior Football League Premier Division, having been formed in 2015 as Lopes Tavares. Last season saw the club play at Step 5 for the first time in their history, and finished 8th out of 21 teams. The Kings also reached the last 16 of the FA Vase, but were later removed from the competition for fielding an ineligible player. It will be the first ever meeting between the two sides.
Last season they also competed in the London Senior Cup for the first time, losing in their inaugural match away to Dartford in Round 1, with now-Hamlet man George Porter among the scorers in a 5-2 victory for the Darts.
The Kings currently sit in 12th position in the early table in the Essex Senior League, with seven points from their opening six games. They arrive tonight having failed to win in their last three league outings, including Saturday's 1-0 reverse at Stansted. They have managed to cause a small cup upset this season, as they held higher level opponents Sheppey United to a 3-3 draw in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup, only to lose 6-0 in the replay. The key man for them tonight will be striker Richard Kone, who has netted five times so far this season.
As previously mentioned, Dulwich will have been without a title in this competition in 19 years by the time the final comes around next year, with the club's fifth success coming against Tooting & Mitcham United at Hendon in 2004, when two Omari Coleman goals sealed the trophy. We have also won the trophy in 1925, 1939, 1950 and 1984. We have also been losing finalists in 1906, 1908, 1921, 1928, 1943 and 2002.
We of course come into the game having advanced in the FA Cup on Saturday for a much needed boost of confidence, with George Porter and Danny Mills helping us to a 2-1 win over Margate. Tonight will see Paul Barnes make plenty of changes with a view to having a look at all of the playing squad available to him over his first couple of matches as manager.
The winners of the tie will also be at home in Round 2, and will face either Cray Wanderers or Leyton Orient, although the clash between those two is not scheduled to take place until November 2nd.
Admission prices are just £6 for adults, £3 for concessions and Under 13s are free. Live radio commentary will also be available from Ryan Matthews on Mixlr from 7:40pm.
