Ryman League Premier Division
Last Saturday, we travelled down to the Sussex coast to league leaders Bognor Regis Town and came away with a creditable pout from a 1-1 draw.
On a bitterly cold afternoon, we almost fell behind in the very first minute, Matt Drage clearing off the line from Jimmy Muitt. But we soon found our rhythm and went on to enjoy the better of the first half. Dipo Akinyemi went past his marker on the wing and delivered an inviting cross which we failed to take advantage of. Later Ashley Carew fired into the side netting after a forward run by Michael Chambers. We took the lead in the 18th minute. A neat corner routine on the left saw Jamie Mascoll receive from Gavin Tomlin and cross into the goalmouth where Matt Drage made contact and the ball went in with the help of a deflection off Bognor midfielder James Fraser. Just after the half-hour mark, Michael Chambers hit the top of the crossbar with a looping header from Gavin Tomlin’s corner. Fraser went close for Bognor as they threatened briefly, but we remained on top and only a last-ditch tackle by home skipper Sami El-Abd prevented Dipo Akinyemi from doubling our lead.
Bognor ‘keeper Dan Lincoln also denied Dipo Akinyemi earl in the second half, but the home side upped their game and gradually got on top. Preston Edwards saved low down from Muitt and our defence stood firm. It was only in the closing stages that Bognor seriously threatened and, after the outstanding Fraser went close again, the Rocks equalised in the 85th minute. A left-wing corner from Dylan Barnett found the unmarked James Crane whose downward header squeezed past a couple of our defenders and Preston Edwards and into the net. Bognor might even have snatched a win deep into stoppage time, but, fortunately, Fraser’s curling left foot shot was just off target.
