Hampton & Richmond Borough 0-3 Dulwich Hamlet

Liam Hickey

What a difference a change of year makes, as Dulwich put their abject display at Maidstone behind them with victory at Hampton & Richmond Borough.

After the abject surrender at Maidstone in the last game of 2019 there was renewed hope for fans of The Hamlet as they produced a committed display to secure the win at The Beveree. There were changes aplenty from the previous match with the entire defence restructured, including a debut for Jesse Debrah on loan from Millwall.

The Hamlet were slow to grow into the game and, for the home side, Cole Brown perhaps should have done better than to shoot wide in the 2nd minute. Charlie Grainger then had to be out quickly to thwart Donaldson, whilst The Hamlet's only effort was a shot by Shamir Mullings that sailed over the stand.

Cox was booked for the home team in the 13th minute as he brought down Ben Chapman as he threatened to get away on the right. The resulting free kick was headed wide by an unmarked Christian Smith. However, the home side were doing most of the coherent attacking and Grainger had to be out quickly to thwart Donaldson as he reached a pass threaded inside Chapman.

A Christian Smith clearance across the pitch was picked up by Jeffrey Monakana, but his purposeful run along the right was finished with a disappointing cross before the home side's fans in the main stand thought they had taken a 28th minute lead. Hill was played in on the Dulwich left but his shot was wide of the post but came back off the advertising boards to rustle the side netting.

The Hamlet finally had a shot on target after 30 minutes, but Quade Taylor's weak effort was easily fielded by Lincoln in the home goal. Two minutes later Dominic Vose was booked for halting a dangerous break through the middle, with Hill's subsequent free kick just clearing the crossbar.

However, it was Dulwich who took the lead in the 34th minute. Good hold up play from Dylan Kearney on the right saw a lofted cross just eluded the head of Shamir Mullings but was met on the half-volley by Lionel Ainsworth, who scored his first goal for the club with a fine shot that went in off the far post. Having taken the lead, Dulwich took just three minutes to double it. Mullings out-muscled Inman wide on the left and he advanced forward before squaring to the onrushing Dylan Kearney who slid in to force the ball over the line to score for the fourth consecutive match.

The home side sought to respond before the interval, but when Hill arrived at the far post his volley was well struck but sailed nearer to the corner flag than the goal.

Half Time 0-2

Hampton made two changes at half time as they looked to quickly find a way back into the match and they came close in the 51st minute as frantic defending from The Hamlet managed to deny both Lewthwaite and Hill.

A lengthy delay followed as the Assistant Referee sustained an injury in the 55th minute and was unable to continue. Once a replacement had been found both teams emerged from the dressing rooms to start again. Dulwich were content to defend their lead and had few alarms as their defence looked sound, with new loan signing Jesse Debrah winning crucial headers and tackles.

The home side had a couple of half chances but Lewthwaite and Hill were unable to test Charlie Grainger , whilst the Dulwich keeper easily held an effort from Wassmer. In fact, with 14 minutes left to play (but some time past the original 90), The Hamlet added a third goal. Fine play from Dominic Vose saw him deliver a low cross from the left that Nyren Clunis expertly steered past Lincoln in the home goal.

The home side looked for a foothold, but Hill's free kick was easily gathered by Grainger and the Dulwich keeper sprung to his left to keep out an effort from Farrell. In fact, it took a fine stop from Lincoln to prevent Nyren Clunis adding a fourth for The Hamlet.

Final Score 0-3
