On Tuesday evening a much-changed side took the field at AFC Hornchurch for our quarterfinal tie in the Alan Turvey Trophy (Ryman League Cup). Despite making seven changes to our starting line up from Bognor Regis, we managed to defeat the home side 3-2 thanks to two late goals.
The match opened very quietly, with little if any goalmouth action in the early stages. Indeed, more than 20 minutes had passed before Ibra Sekajja forced home keeper Rob Budd to make full-length save, the first incident of note. As halftime approached, however, the Urchins, who are up with the frontrunners in Ryman North, began to get on top and they went ahead in the 38th minute when Kenzer Lee scored from 15 yards following a corner. Shortly afterwards Tobi Coker blazed over the bar from a narrow angle, then Preston Edwards held a long-range hot from Abs Thompson. But we fought back and drew level as the half went into stoppage time, Ibra Sekajja firing past Budd from 10 yards.
The Urchins enjoyed another good spell around the hour mark with Preston Edwards making a couple of fine saves, blocking at the feet of Jed Chouman and then denying Coker at close quarters. They eventually regained the lead in the 64th minute when Coker got the better of Quade Taylor and fired into the roof of the net from 8 yards. Soon afterwards we introduced Gavin Tomlin and Ashley Carew into the action and the experienced duo were able to turn the match in our favour. Ibra Sekajja went past the keeper on the outside in the 69th minute but was unable to either get a shot in or find a colleague. Six minutes later, at the other end, James Morrish side footed wide from ten yards and this was to prove a costly miss. We made it 2-2 in the 83rd minute when Sanchez Ming passed inside from the right and Gavin Tomlin steadied himself before placing a low shot from 20 yards past the diving Budd. The winning goal came just 2 minutes from time. Ashley Carew curled a free kick from out on the left into the goalmouth and the ball eluded everyone on its way into the far corner of the net.
