Dunfermline U15s beaten in thrilling Caley Cup Final
By Kevin Storie
Perthshire win with last play of the game
A massively impressive performance from our U15s saw us come very close to victory, but Perthshire bravely came back with two late scores to win.
After a competitive opening 5 minutes, Perthshire opened the scoring after their excellent outside centre ghosted through a gap in our backline. We quickly regrouped, and scored up the left flank; Charlie scoring after a break by Finlee and offload to Duncan. Thereafter some mistakes crept into our game, which let Perth take command of the game through three quick tries at the hands of their stand-off, winger and a 2nd for their 13.
Half time offered us a chance to regroup. A few words from our captain, Finlee, seemed to make the difference and our boys rose to the occasion in the second half. For the next 20 minutes the players gave an incredible performance, scoring 4 tries in rapid succession through Finlee, Aaron (twice), and Finlay Stobbs with an audacious show and go. All very well taken tries, the latter giving us an unlikely lead for the first time in the match.
On a rare attack, Perth managed to score through their replacement lock, putting them back in the lead, before Dunfermline were back on the attack with a break from Aaron down the right. Excellent cover from the fullback foiled a two on one which would have seen Cameron score, but Dunfermline kept the ball alive and swept it across to the left wing where Finlee and Duncan combined to come close. Support in numbers secured the ruck, and with Kailo and Andrew slickly moving the ball to Kian to cut through the line, Aidan's support was on hand to give the pass to put Gregor in under the posts! Excellent, excellent play, and perhaps enough to secure us the trophy?
Alas no, Perthshire showed what a terrific team they are and dominated the remaining minutes. Despite committed defence from Dunfermline, Perthshire went over on the left wing and levelled the game at 38-38.
Just time for one more play, Perthshire gathered and broke through the centre. Aaron's covering tackle looked like it saved the day, but their 13 (who else?) was on hand to gather the offload and score.
Final Score: Perthshire 45 - 38 Dunfermline
Well done to all involved. The players will remember this game for a long time, and the standard of play was terrific. We can take a lot of pride for our determined performance.
