Colts fall short against Peebles

Derek Simpson

Home loss in Borders Semi Junior League

Duns Colts 13 points, Peebles Colts 32 points.

Duns Colts entertained Peebles at the old High School on saturday seeking to follow the fine example set by the Under-16s side, who had defeated their rivals from Peebles by 62 points to 5 under the floodlights the previous evening.

However, there was to be no repeat by the Colts as their visitors claimed victory by 32 points to 13 after a very entertaining contest watched by a large crowd in warm autumn sunshine.

Peebles Colts were bigger than Duns in every position on the park, particularly amongst the forwards where they had a huge physical superiority. This did not deter the home pack, who often had Peebles creaking in the scrum, and Duns nicked a few strikes against the head.

The early exchanges were even, but Duns opened the scoring from a long range penalty goal kicked by Dom Ginn, who continues to close in on the Colts points-scoring record. Peebles kicked two penalties of their own, and as half time approached they scored the game's first try when a slick backs moved - coupled with some shoddy tackling - allowed them to cross the line. A successful conversion made it 13 - 3 at the break.

Duns enjoyed their best spell of the match in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Callum Redden scored a fine solo try when his pace took him through the centre of the park whilst brushing off two attempted tackles, and he scored under the bar. Dom Ginn's conversion reduced the gap to 13 - 10, and the match was in the balance.

Peebles settled after this setback, and were in control for much of the remainder of the match. They scored three tries in the final 15 minutes, two of which were converted, to put some gloss on the scoreline from their point of view, whilst all Duns could muster was a second penalty by Dom Ginn.

Overall the coaches were pleased with the Colts' performance, and with more matches together the team will continue to improve. Next up is the long trip to Langholm in the league this saturday.
