Dunvant 2nds win 20-12
Dunvant 2nds reverse the score of the away fixture and tear up the league form book to beat Kenfig Hill 20-12
With the first league fixture between these two teams being only 2 weeks ago, the 21-12 loss Dunvant suffered was still fresh in the memory and the players were determined to reverse this score line at Broadacre.
It was Dunvant that started the better with some good possession, however as the half progressed the solid Kenfig Hill defence and poor decision making by Dunvant brought the visitors into the game.
A chip forward by the ‘Mules’ wasn’t cleanly taken by retreating winger Joe Woodward and he was unable to clear his lines. The strong chase smothered the ball and drove Joe over the try line for a 5-yard scrum. The pick from the number 8 was dealt with by the back row, however quick recycled ball and slow reaction from the rest of the Dunvant defence saw the ball being move quickly and Kenfig scoring in the corner, the touchline conversion was missed, and the visitors moved into a 5-0 lead.
Dunvant were failing to get a grip on the game with a poor line out and poor decisions hampering them building any momentum. A chip from our 22-yard line was scooped up my the Kenfig Hill Full Back who danced through a dog legged defence to score under the posts. This was easily converted and Dunvant found themselves 12 points down. Frustration was building, and two Yellow cards were shown before the half time to Jonny Jones and Nicholas Maestri. This didn’t help Dunvant’s cause. However, Outside Half Dannie White slotted a penalty before the break to get Dunvant on the score board.
Changes were made with Scott McGregor being substituted for Ceri Davies, Rory Beswick coming off for Ethan Murphy and Aaron Perkins being forced to leave the field with a knock to the back and being replaced by Callum Irvine.
The half time talk focused the mind and Dunvant showed much improved composure and physicality. This momentum moved them into Kenfig Hills half where they won a scrum inside the 22. Another good pick up from Mark Loughlin, then a sharp carry by Ceri Davies softened the defence and make shift scrum half Joe Woodward found a gap around the base of the ruck to score from a few yards out. The conversion was put over by Dannie White and Dunvant were within 2.
Better defensive kicking pushed Dunvant back into the visitor’s half and it was again powerful carrying that opened a small gap for Joe Woodward to squeeze through. However, this time there was some work to do. Joe managed to break the first tackle and showed good strength to get to the line from 20 yards out. Another successful conversion put Dunvant in the lead 17-12 with 10 mins to go.
Kenfig Hill came close put handling let them down. It was Dannie White that calmed the nerves with another penalty that took Dunvant a score clear with minutes left. The game finished 20-12.
This was a great win for the seconds, and a great team effort to come back from a 12-point deficit to beat a Kenfig Hill side that have only lost once this year in the Ospreys League.
