Another good all-round performance by City produced 9 tries and swept old rivals Hartlepool Rovers away at Hollow Drift to maintain their 5 point lead at the top of the Durham and Northumberland League.

19 – 0 ahead after 13 minutes, they had total control, full-back Phil Stewart going over for the first try after 6 or 7 phases of play in the 3rd minute, flanker Jeff Roberts adding the second from a driven lineout and then centre Craig Dominick taking an inside pass to score when fellow-centre Arnie Stevenson broke.

With scrum-half Paul Armstrong converting 2 of them, they were flying and Rovers were scarcely able to get their hands on the ball. But perhaps overconfidence crept in together with a bit of indiscipline and although they mounted a couple of fine long-range attacks that could easily have extended the lead, Rovers held them to 19- 0 at the interval and were a little unlucky not to score when awarded a series of penalties 5 metres out from the City line.

There was no holding the home side thereafter however as they rattled up 6 more tries. Stewart got his second from a short pass by stand-off Mark Bedworth as they attacked from a scrum 15 metres out, winger Bradley Pears broke well and sidestepped the last two defenders on a fine 30 metre run for the next and then ran, chipped ahead and caught the last defender on the Rovers’ line for Stevenson to get his second.

Replacement winger Tom Hodgkiss was next, racing over from 29 metres to score in the corner after Armstrong had broken, a burst from Dominick and good link play with winger Sam Heron and Stevenson produced the latter’s second try, and finally, No.8 Peter Dent got the touchdown for a pushover try from a 5 metre scrum.

Armstrong converted 4 of the 6 tries before, at the final whistle, Rovers were rewarded with a penalty try converted by stand-off Daz Fawcett as they mounted pressure on the home line and City conceded a string of penalties.
