City’s Northumberland & Durham 1 League form continued unabated at Hollow Drift as they cruised to another big victory.

City scored 11 tries against a Ryton side who refused to give up but were simply overwhelmed. Already through the 1,000 points scored mark for all matches this season, which is believed to be a Club record, they are rapidly approaching it in league fixtures alone and with 5 games remaining seem certain to pass it.

They started brightly, going ahead after only 2 minutes when winger Chris Metcalfe forced his way over in the right corner after No.9 Peter Dent had pinched a Ryton Lineout ball on the other side. Stand-off Paul Armstrong converted, centre Bradley Pears added a neat drop-goal and then supported well following a diagonal kick to score the first of his 4 tries after quarter of an hour.

It looked plain sailing for them, but Ryton hit back with an interception try by scrum-half Steve Lee from halfway and quickly followed it up when they counter-attacked from a City clearance for No. 8 Colin Coulson to shrug off a couple of tackles and score their second.
Winger Alex Coldbeck converted one of them to reduce the arrears to 15 – 12 and make City sit up and think.

But order was rapidly restored, Metcalfe and Dent adding two more tries and Armstrong converting both and adding a penalty before the interval for a 32 – 12 lead.

A further seven City tries followed in the second-half interspersed with another two by lock Matt Oxley and Coulson for spirited Ryton who deservedly earned themselves a 4 try bonus point.

Replacement Tom Hodgson started off the City blitz with the first try immediately after the interval, Pears added three more, Metcalfe got his third, Dent his second and finally winger Sam Heron got in on the act. Armstrong converted six of them and City continue on their merry way at the top of the table.

Next week City travel to Horden (KO. 3.00pm)
