Durham City proved much the stronger side in their home league fixture against Team Northumbria.

They were dominant in all phases of the game and took an early lead five minutes into the game with a penalty goal kicked by scrum half Paul Armstrong. Two minutes later, Luke Burgess touched down for a well worked try converted by Armstrong to put City 10 points up.
Richard Knowles playing in the unusual position of stand –off was delighted to score a second converted try for City and moments later Armstrong stretched the lead still further with a well struck penalty.
Following an ill tempered skirmish one player from each side was yellow carded, making a second carding for Team Northumbria. City continuing to dominate, then scored the best try of the game when Knowles made a well judged chip over the opposing threequarters, followed through and caught it, then passed to Will Kirtley who crossed the line to touch down, giving City a very comfortable half time lead of 25 – 0
City continued from where they had left off after the interval as Chris Metcalfe took a well timed pass from Kirtley to score a converted try giving City a welcome bonus point for scoring four tries. This was City’s final score as the side had to be re-shuffled after the injury of second half replacement Jack Johnson, causing players to play out of position.
The game became a bit static, until in the dying throes of the match, a desperate Team Northumbria suddenly threw caution to the wind and hacked the ball on over the line for Lome Fa’atau to beat the City defence to the touchdown converted by Bradley Pears. This gave them a boost of confidence and they tried the same move again, but this time City kicked the ball dead for a 5 metre scrum from which prop Ollie Longthorne touched down for an unconverted try giving Team Northumbria a score of 12 points.
The final whistle blew moments later. The score of 32-12 was a good win for City but the final scoreline flattered their opposition who for almost 70 minutes of the game had never even looked as though they were going to score.
Next game on Sat 17th Sept is away at Malton and Norton
