Easington exit the Northern League Cup after losing to Jarrow Roofing on penalties.

Connor Lamb13 Oct 2016 - 23:07

Having drawn 2-2 after 90 minutes, the game went to penalties and First Division Jarrow Roofing came out on top.

Manager Paul Frame made seven changes to the side which drew with Team Northumbria on Saturday as a lot of fringe players got a run out to impress.

Calvin Smith and Paul Chow both netted to give Roofing a comfortable lead at half-time but a Nathan Renton brace pulled the score back to 2-2 only for Roofing to advance to the next round through penalties.

A very quiet start saw little action with a couple of Jarrow Roofing corners being the only half chances but even these were easily cleared. With ten minutes on the clock, Easington's Jack Pounder found a bit of room but his shot was blocked while at the other end, Michael Mackay fired well wide.

That was all of the action really until the 19th minute when a defensive error gifted Easington's Nathan Renton a chance. Renton looked to round the 'keeper and almost did but Andrew Jenninson.

With 23 minutes on the clock, David Stevens drove through the Roofing defence for the East Durham outfit but Stevens could only drag wide when on the edge of the penalty area.

As Jarrow Roofing looked to open the scoring, Anthony Myers passed to find Michael Mackay but his effort dropped harmlessly wide.

Luke Page then tried his luck for Easington but could only force a comfortable save from Andrew Jenninson and at this point, there hadn't been an awful lot in the game. The only chances were half chances with not an awful lot of actual action.

Just before the half hour mark, Jarrow Roofing almost broke the deadlock. A cross into the penalty area where a flick on had Ethan Anderson beaten. But, Peter Jones was on hand to head clear off the line.

Having almost conceded, Easington Colliery started to build and good football on 31 minutes saw Nathan Renton find Jack Pounder who quickly gave it back to Nathan Renton. Renton managed to cut in to beat his man and he forced a decent save from Andrew Jenninson.

Seconds later, Nathan Renton was involved again. This time he found Luke Page and the Easington skipper sent a powerful drive which was saved by the strong hands of Andrew Jenninson.

Despite this positive play from the hosts, Jarrow Roofing broke the deadlock with the next chance as Calvin Smith picked up possession 25 yards from goal and the former Consett man powered a moving effort which bulleted into the net giving Ethan Anderson no chance.

And, after a slight quiet period, the South Tynesiders doubled their lead as Alex White's cross found Paul Chow and he played a quick one-two with Michael Mackay before Chow slotted home to finish a great passing move.

Easington rather harshly went into the break two goals down. There wasn't an awful lot of difference between the two sides in the opening 45 minutes.

Half-time: Easington Colliery 0-2 Jarrow Roofing

The hosts started the second half brightly without creating many chances. Roofing did well to deal with a few Easington corners while with the one shot, Chris Freeman cut in but could only fire an effort which was blocked.

The game was 55 minutes old when Easington Colliery pulled a goal back. A route one ball found Nathan Renton who drove towards goal before firing home off the post to make it game on.

And, only three minutes later, Renton was on hand to score his second and pull Easington level. A Peter Jones corner was floated into the penalty area and Renton rose highest to head beyond Andrew Jenninson and pull Easington level.

It was all to play for at this point but Easington had the momentum through Renton's two goals. However, it was Jarrow Roofing who came closest to retaking the lead on 65 minutes as a long-range dipping effort fell just over the crossbar.

Paul Chow then tried his luck to no success for the away side while Jack Pounder looked to test Andrew Jenninson for Easington but he too was unable to find the target.

With just ten minutes to play, Easington substitute Joe Kerridge gave Nathan Renton a chance but he poked narrowly wide when looking for his hat-trick.

Two minutes from time, Jarrow Roofing thought they'd found a winner. Paul Chow rose to meet a corner but a superb save from Ethan Anderson kept the scores level. The rebound was bundled towards goal and the Roofers were all celebrating thinking the ball had crossed the line when it in fact hadn't!

In additional time, Easington's player maker Luke Page danced a way through the Jarrow Roofing defence but his shot was blocked as was the follow up.

No more chances came and the referee's full-time whistle meant penalties were to follow.

Following 5 penalties each, the score was level at 4-4 with Reece Kenney, Nathan Renton, Luke Page and Peter Jones all finding the net for Easington. However, Aaron Croft missed the deciding penalty and Jarrow Roofing went through the next round where they'll host Whickham.
