The Eastenders embark on their last hunt of silverware tomorrow night when they travel to Roos for a first round tie in the South Holderness Cup (6.30pm).
The revamped end-of-season competition offers Adam Jamieson’s side their last chance of salvaging something from what has been at times a disappointing 2018/19 campaign.
That said the locals have shown this season that on their day they can compete with the best teams at their level and as such they should be quietly confident of progress against a team some two divisions below them.
Of course, cup football can be a lottery and Roos have several players in their ranks who can hurt the Eastenders, not least Sam Huteson who played for United back in their CML days.
The Roosters also upset the odds when winning the South Holderness Cup in dramatic fashion in 2016, rallying late on to edge out Hedon Rangers in one of the best finals seen in recent times. They are a club that has enjoyed a rise in fortunes in recent times, with their current East Riding County League Division 1 status the highest attained in the club’s history in Saturday football.
Jamieson has a strong squad at his disposal, with Joe Taylor in goal for the first time in five matches. Outfield, Ash Snaith, Craig Smalley and Dan Warcup are absent through work, while Josh Biglin is injured. Danny Blount and Owen Mountain return.
The winners will meet either Hedon Rangers Academy or Hedon Rangers Reserves in the semi-final at Patrington next Thursday (9th). The all-Hedon tie also takes place tomorrow.
Squad: Joe Taylor (GK), Anthony Barnett, Danny Blount, Brad Bowden, Karl Fitzpatrick, Kris Fitzpatrick, Chris Frost, Andy Graham, Adam Jamieson, Steve Jamieson, Luke Jeffery, Owen Mountain, Nathan Verity, Ben Wilbraham
* Both teams will observe a minute’s silence prior to kick-off tomorrow in memory of Frank Windas who passed away on Sunday. Frank was a long-serving member of Withernsea AFC and as such is well-known to many people involved in football in South Holderness.
