By way of a reminder can the Club request that all Matches, League or Friendlies are communicated to the Bar & Kitchen Managers (Ashley and Lynne), our referee coordinators and Pitch Allocations (Suzanne Wood), enclosed are all e-mail addresses.

It is important that matches including kick off times and player numbers for meals (both Teams) are confirmed to the Bar & Kitchen Manager in advance and receive confirmation. Can we also ask any changes, cancellations be again sent to Bar,Kitchen, Match Day Manager and Pitch allocations no later than the Friday evening were possible. Food has to be brought and staff arranged and cancellation of games results in waste and cost for uncessary levels of staff if not communicated in a timley manor.

Jane Brooks -
John Cribb -
Suzanne Wood -

Even if Fixtures have been booked well in advance, please just confirm nearer the time or a couple of weeks before to confirm numbers etc.

Appreciate your support and we aim to ensure every fixture is the most enjoyable one and to help us cater for your needs.

Best Regards

There is currently a desperate shortage of Referees in the Sussex Society,
as many of you will have discovered when your lower team games go uncovered
and you have to find a willing body to officiate your game.

As no games have been cancelled through lack of a referee, there must be
bodies out there with the ability to blow the whistle and give players a
fulfilling afternoon. It is good fun, keeps you involved in the game and
gives no little satisfaction when you have enabled thirty players to have
had an enjoyable afternoon, even if they may not have agreed with all your

The need for Referees is URGENT and I attach two posters, the first of which
I should be grateful if you could print out and display on your notice
boards, in the changing rooms, and anywhere else where it will catch the
eye, and the second, which is an interactive poster, allowing you to book
online for the various Sussex Courses that enable people to hone their
skills and receive expert tuition, whether working with children, coaching
or refereeing. Perhaps both these posters could be sent out to your database
of members for those that use e-mail to communicate with the Club.

As Lord Kitchener once said "Your Game Needs You", or something like that!

Scrum factory course feedback. The following feedback was received following the running of the Scrum Factory course.

"... Thank you for running the Scrum factory course, but as discussed I wanted to recommend the Level 1 course to all. I have heard mention that it is just a formality and that people were looking to forgo this course and just to do their Level 2 courses. Having coached my son through to 18s and into adult rugby, and indeed having had the privilege of playing with a lot of the boys I had coached I thought I knew quite a bit about how and what to coach. However the Level 1 course was quite an eye opener. It took all the things I knew, shuffled them up and make perfect sense as an approach of how to coach. And it was delivered, in the style it promoted, with fun as much learning. I wholeheartedly recommend that every coach of a children's team at ERFC go on this course. It should make everyone think about all of the things we do on a Sunday morning, and for the better!"

We would encourage all coaches attending courses to provide feedback to enable the club to continually improve and tailor the courses for your needs.

Posted - 23rd February - Match Day Manager

In order to assist with the smooth running of the Club during weekends when hosting Matches, Teams and busy periods, we are pleased to announce an appointment of a 'Match Day Manager' that will be able to help organise the Club and ensure we continue to offer the best possible experiance not only to our players/members but those visiting us. We have over the last few weekends implemented this and have already received great feedback and some Coaches have been introduced to John Cribb who has been appointed for this role. We take this opportunity to welcome John to our great team.

Main areas of focus but not limited are;

  • Display of Pitch allocations and able to direct to where matches are being played.
  • Unlocking and locking of Ambulance gate for matches, training periods.
  • Unlocking of Changing Rooms including Shower Block and turning on Showers.
  • Checking how Changing facilities are left following matches, training
  • Be point of contact relating to facilities for both home and away visitors.
  • Generally ensure facilities, changing rooms and outside areas are looked after, safe and tidy.
  • Will check regularly the Pavilion Kit store to ensure is left tidy.

The Match Day Manager will be on-site both Saturday and Sunday's throughout the remainder of the season and when delivered will be visible by sporting a High-Vis jacket. I am sure you will agree this is another step in the right direction and please continue to ensure doors to all facilities are locked, changing rooms left clean and tidy and no kit left for others to just borrow.

If you have any questions, please contact Steve Snell

New IRM Scrum Directive - Guidance for Referees

Following the announcement of the new IRB Scrum Directive we have received a number of requests for clarification around the appropriateness of referees touching children and or players of the opposite sex. Therefore please follow the guidance below.

IRB Laws Directive
To support the new IRB Scrum Directive the following additional guidance is offered:

Ensure scrum half (and scrum half replacements) are briefed to the new protocol.

Ensure they are aware of how you will indicate that you are happy for them to put the ball in:

a) If on the far side of the scrum to the put-in the referee will raise his hand and nod his head in a yes motion when he happy for the ball to be put-in.
b) If on the same side as the put-in the referee should tap the scrum half on the back when he is happy for the ball to be put-in.

Guidance for those refereeing children and or players of the opposite sex
Below should be included as a protocol to be adopted if refereeing under age games and women and girls.

To support the new IRB Scrum Directive the following additional guidance is offered:

Ensure scrum half (and scrum half replacements) are briefed to the new protocol

With under age games suggest that when you brief the scrum half the coach is present so there can be no ambiguity regarding where and how you will touch the scrum half to indicate they can put the ball in. Alternatively, if you are uncomfortable with this, manage the scrum from the far side to the put-in but please ensure the safety elements and need to move to put in side if the need arises.

With male referees refereeing women and girls matches please ensure a similar process is adopted to ensure there is no doubt about where the contact will be made.

If necessary, whilst the protocol indicates touching the scrum half on the back, at underage and women and girls games you may feel more comfortable touching the player on the shoulder but it is essential that the player is briefed accordingly
