Kintbury Prove Too Strong
09/05/15 23:12

Fourth Division East Hendred Reserves were contesting their first AG Kingham Cup Final against Kintbury Rangers Reserves from Division Two but in the end the higher league side proved too strong for them. Kintbury were on top from the off, but even so their opening goal on 10 minutes was very fortuitous. Rob Denison delivered a floating free kick from the left side of the box that Hendred keeper Roland Pacey inexplicably left allowing the ball to nestle in the back of the net. Kintbury continued to be on top, but Hendred managed to pull level mid-way through the half. Chris Beesley swung in a corner that Kintbury keeper Ross Thorne could only punch up in the air rather than and away and James Bowsher was on hand to head the ball powerfully through the crowd to equalise. Kintbury almost re-took the lead in fortuitous circumstances again when Martin Orme intercepted a cross only to deflect the ball towards his own goal. Pacey scrambled back but could only look on helplessly as the ball sailed over his head, but luckily for him the ball rebounded off the bar, unfortunately for him directly to George Lybech-Harris who headed the ball back towards the goal. However, Pacey recovered enough to snatch the ball out of the air before it crossed the line. Both sides had further half chances before half time, but the two sides went into the break all square. Kintbury did re-take the lead just five minutes after the re-start when Denison delivered a low cross from the right which Alastair Shambrook met with a beautiful diving header from 15 yards to score. They almost scored again a minute later when Josh Way jinked his way into the box but his low close range poked shot was stopped one-handed by Pacey. Kintbury did get their third on 65 minutes, though, when Way yet again jinked his way into the box, this time slicing a shot straight to the unmarked Lybech-Harris 12 yards from goal who steered the ball into the net. Little in the way of goalmouth action happened in the last quarter of the match and so it was Kintbury captain Glenn Smith who collected the AG Kingham Cup for the first time in nine years.
