Tight Game Settled by a Penalty
EP lost 0-1 to Lingfield at the Lashmar
East Preston suffered another 0-1 defeat their third in the last five league games as this time Lingfield scored the only goal to take all three points. As the scoreline suggests it was a tight match.
Manager Bob Paine made one change to the team that was beaten by Haywards Heath in the Senior Cup in midweek with Tom Crook (pictured) , who was 17 earlier this month, made his senior debut in place of the injured George Bentley. Crook was assured throughout and was only beaten by a penalty.
EP started brightly with Dan Huet having the first opportunity with a shot from the edge of the area which was saved. On 18 mins Lucas Pattenden made tracks down the right and he cut the ball back to Luke Brodie and his shot was blocked by the defender and cleared to safety. Half way through the half Huet again turned on the ball in the box but his effort went over the bar.
Lingfield had a break, down the right hand side, on 28 mins and a good cross was well defended by Jack Barnes and the ball went for a corner. Barnes was very unlucky a few minutes later when the Lingfield keeper gave the ball away and the ball broke to him and he lifted the ball over the keeper and looked like it was going in only for the ball to take a large bounce and clear the bar – very unlucky and fortunate for the Lingfield keeper.
With 10 minutes to go of the half a Lingfield forward found some space in the box and got his shot away but Barnes again was there to get a great block in. EP finished the half strongly and following a great move, Brodie found Barnes at the far post and his shot was saved by the keeper.
Half Time: 0-0
The half started as the first half had finished with EP creating opportunities first Asa Nicholson got down the right and his cross found Huet whose shot was saved by the keeper and the ball went for a corner. The corner was taken short to Barnes who whipped the ball in and Huet’s header was straight at the keeper.
The goal that decided the match came on 53 minutes when Nathan Da Costa got caught in a tangle of legs in the area and the referee decided it was a penalty. Clements took and scored although Crook got a hand to the ball.
EP had a couple of opportunities as they looked for an equaliser firstly Nicholson’s shot was pushed over the bar by the Lingfield keeper and then Nicholson got his head to a Pattenden cross which was easily saved. The last chance came with two minutes to go when Scott Rafferty put in a great ball from the right and Pattenden decided to square to Jake Heryet rather then shoot and the opportunity was gone.
Full Time: 0-1
Manager Bob Paine said ‘Another frustrating day for us and once again on the wrong end of a 0-1 defeat. I was pleased with our general play and maybe we are not creating as many chances as we were. We have the seventh best defensive record in the league but the fourth worse scoring record. It isn’t about defenders or strikers we defend well as a team and somehow we need to score more goals as a team. We will solve this together and for sure we are all working hard to make it better.
Very pleased today for young goalkeeper, Tom Crook, who made his senior debut and did a great job. It once again shows the quality of the young players and they will get opportunities. I’m very pleased how we are progressing on the pitch at the club’.
