EP Lose to Bottom of the Table Eastbourne Utd
A poor second half saw EP lose 2-3 as improving Eastbourne Utd grab the three valuable points
A poor home defeat saw East Preston lose 2-3 against bottom of the league Eastbourne Utd.
Manager Bob Paine made two changes to the team that lost narrowly to Chichester City FC last week with Dave Beaney and Lucas Pattenden replacing Jake Heryet and Luke Brodie.
The first half saw EP dominate possession and could have been at least three goals up at half time. As it was the home side only took a slender one goal advantage into the break.
The only goal of the half came on 16 mins when a great pass from Josh Etherington found Pattenden on the right and his excellent cross found Asa Nicholson on the edge of the six yard box who made no mistake with his tenth goal of the season.
EP should have increased their lead when from another Pattenden cross Nicholson’s header saw Hawkins in the Eastbourne goal pull off a great save. EP had a goal disallowed on 31 mins when a Nicholson cross found Barnes who stabbed home but was ruled offside. More great build up play from the home side saw Dan Huet’s shot blocked and the ball fell to Pattenden whose rocket of a shot hit the post and was cleared to safety. Final chance of the half fell to Tom Lyne as his header from a Pattenden corner went wide of the post.
Half Time: 1-0
Eastbourne were level on 52 mins when a poor back pass from Etherington was missed by George Bentley in the EP goal and the away side took full advantage. Eastbourne were having more possession in the second half and took the lead on 60 mins when Schaaf scored his first goal of the match. The away sides lead only lasted five minutes when the ball came out to Lyne on the edge of the box and his half volley flew into the corner of the net.
The deciding goal came on 71 mins when EP gave the ball away and a quick break from Eastbourne saw the ball switched to the right and a great cross found Schaaf all alone in the six yard box and he made no mistake as he headed home.
Full Time: 2-3
Manager Bob Paine said ‘Was very pleased with our first half performance and we should have killed the game by half time as we could and should have been out of sight. In the end those missed chances cost us the match as our second half was as poor as the first half was good. More mistakes allowed them back in the match and our lack of confidence at the moment meant we stopped doing the things we were doing well in the first half. We’ve scored two goals in each of the last three matches but only taken a point because defensively as a team we have given away some poor goals. If we are not careful we will be dragged down into a relegation battle and its time for all of us to step up show some real character to get us out of this poor run of results’.
