Eccleshill United came into the game having lost their previous two and had conceded fourteen goals altogether in those two games. Whereas, Liversedge was in hot top form - unbeaten in their last seven games; including a win over Bridlington Town.
Before the game, it was only two places and three points in-which separated the two teams - the Eagles having the upper hand. The Eagles also had the upper hand in the reverse fixture between the two sides - coming in December, when goals from Aran Basi, Chris Lever and a brace from Adam Shaw and Khurram Shazad led Eccleshill to a six-nil win.
The early parts of the game consisted of both sides trying to work each other out, but there were no clear open chances up until the away side took the lead on the twenty-five-minute mark. It was a corner for Liversedge that defeated the Eagles' defence - Sedge's star player, Joe Walton - was on hand unmarked in the box and glided his header wonderfully past his former teammate Harry Stead in the Eccleshill goal.
Eccleshill nearly made an instant impact from the goal, straight from kick-off and after a few passes - Charlie Flaherty was found out wide in bags of space and it was his cross that met Khurram Shazad who's effort rattled the underside of the crossbar. The Eagles had a follow-up chance from that effort but Liversedge defended perfectly.
The Eagles later nearly equalised just before the break, when an attack resulted in Christopher Lever's sliding effort being blocked on the line by Adimar Neves - there was a call for a handball but the referee waved away all claims. Adimar Neves was again the talking point later in the second half - the physical centre-half tripped Antony Brown in the penalty box, and the referee had no choice other than to point to the spot and send Neves off for a second booking.
Antony Brown stepped up to the penalty and calmly slotted the ball past Ed Wilczynski in the Liversedge goal - pulling the game back to one-all and Brown scoring his second goal in three games. Minutes after from the equaliser and the Eagles turned the scoreline on its head when Aaron Fell slid in to block a low-cross from the far side, unfortunately for the defender - he slid the ball straight into the back of his own net.
The latter parts of the game were the Eagles trying to use game management via their game plan and hold the game out - something they did well. However, Liversedge looked dangerous at times, and Joe Walton and Danny Farrar up front were open to cause the Eagles problems. There were a few late tackles from the Eccleshill players in-which caused bookings.
Liversedge gave a good account of themselves and were very close to a late equaliser when an effort from the edge of the box was flying goalwards, but a tremendous fingertip save from Harry Stead tipped the ball out for a corner. The following corner nearly swung into the goal itself if it wasn't for Harry Stead tipping the ball over the bar.
Eccleshill held their own and won the game by two goals to one - their next game is at home against Handsworth Parramore. A game Sean Regan's men will be thriving to win after the derby day victory yesterday. Post-game match highlights and interviews with Sean Regan, Napoleons Casino Man of The Match, Antony Brown and Matthew Stor will follow.
