Edinburgh Northern 1st XV travel to Double Hedges on Saturday to take on Liberton in the first BT East League 2 fixture of the season.
Northern have recruited heavily in the summer and there are six league debutants in old gold and navy, with the remainder of the squad travelling to the southside of Edinburgh familiar faces from the last few campaigns.
2016/17 proved to be a fruitful season for Edinburgh Northern, with the disappointment of missing out on the Super Six being somewhat reduced by winning the East 2B Division. With this in mind, this a Northern side who will look to build on that finish from last year and return to the top 4.
Their hosts Liberton had a mixed season. They started the season poorly and found themselves at the bottom of the table at Christmas, before finding some form in the spring to record 6 victories, with their only defeat being a 17-7 loss at Inverleith Park.
That fixture was played out on a near flooded pitch and it will be an entertaining experience to watch both sides be able to compete in what looks to be dry conditions on Saturday.
Packing down in the front-row for Northern are props grizzled veteran Kit Walker and the mountain(ous) Kristian Anderson. Joining them in the middle is resident Kiwi Tim Williamson, whose debut for the club came last year in the 25-9 victory over Liberton at Double Hedges.
In the second row, joint top try-scorer from last season Bob MacKintosh finds himself partnering captain Paul Holland, who adds his creative talents to the boiler room once more.
In the back row, Dr. Dominic Harrison is relocated to blindside flanker to accommodate debutant Connor Furlow, who joins us for the first time at openside. Joining them in back-row is another debutant Jamie McCann who starts at 8.
In the back division, Andrew Spiller returns to the scrum-half berth, and Dr. Tom Craven partners him at fly-half, returning for the first time since his outing against Leith last season.
In the centres, Robbie Brown makes a league debut for the club at inside centre, whilst Jake Letham returns to the side following some time off at the end of last season.
The back three is made up of Michael Mawdsley, Matt Fry and Crawford Leslie.
The substitutes are Dougie Candlish, Andrew Suttle, Rory Pounds, Adam Ozay, Stanley Lister and Daniel Johnston.
