As this was probably the last game the current Gillfoot Park will see prior to ground works commencing for the new pitch so victory was a fitting tribute to a ground so rich in rugby league history and which every blade of grass has a tale to tell. And every player…………..
The first try – a full length spectacle - on 12 minutes was indeed a fitting tribute to this ground as the ever impressive Keiron Glenn took an interception from the try line and went like the clappers to the half way marker before being caught by the chasing defenders to offload to a speeding Leon Crellin to finish off under the posts. Converted by John-Paul Brocklebank. 6-0.
At 18 minutes JP chipped through and once again Keiron Glenn was in the action as he charged through a host of would-be defenders to dive on the ball for a try and put his name deservedly in the scoresheet. JP converted. 12 – 0.
As if Keiron hadn’t done enough already to secure his man-of-the-match title he undertook some deft footwork (and came out with his feet facing the right direction!) after taking a sublime pass from the talented stand-off Paul Corkhill to clinch a converted try on 33 minutes.
Leading 18-0 at the break the wind had been taken out of the St Pat’s sails and Egremont came back out in the second half with determination to turn the screw tighter. Rhys Davies made an inspiring break and the intense pressure from Egremont that followed JP drove over the line carrying four defenders and then converted his own try. 24 – 0.
The diminutive powerhouse Daniel Telford was instrumental in Egremont’s fifth try when his timely and weighted off-load gave JP the space to breakthrough and was finished off by young scrum half Lewis Beckwith. JP converted. 30 – 0.
Credit to St Pat’s as they didn’t give up and keep pushing away at Egremont’s defence and St Pat’s youngster Joe Prior was instrumental in starting the moves for this try and having skills and confidence above his years to finish with a deserved try between the sticks. Converted by Bradley Smith. 30 – 6.
On 68 minutes Leon Crellin got the easiest try of his career as a lucky bounce from a high bomb – that bounced uncontrollably and landed in the grateful mits of Leon to put the ball on the floor. Loads of effort there Leon!!! JP converted his 6th successful goal kick of the day.
Wigan had the last say on 72 minutes when weak defence – probably whilst Egremont were reading the paper and playing with their laurels – centre Matty Charnock scooped in for an unconverted try to finish the game 36 – 10.
An excellent all round effort from Egremont from 1 – 17, well played all.
Final score Egremont Rangers 36 – 10 Wigan St Pat’s
