Match Report by Sachin M

Ellerslie’s 3rd XI bowled out Ruddington’s 2nd XI to secure 20 points in the Division H fixture on Saturday.

It was a toss worth winning on a warm afternoon and the satisfaction of choosing to bat first went to skipper Jack Webb. A dry yet grassy wicket greeted Nadeem Akhtar and Kartikey Parekh as they opened the innings at Elms Park. They played with prudence to pass challenging spells from Shahzad Naheem and Isaac Turner unscathed. Facing frequent bouncers from the pacy Turner, Akhtar bide his time in the beginning and pulled them over square leg later on. Rob Derry replaced Turner to bowl the 14th over after Ellerslie sailed to 50. Then, Akhtar was put down on 23 and he promptly despatched the next ball for four.

Five overs later, Akhtar reached his fifty driving Matthew Lond for another boundary as the scoreboard moved to 90. The batsmen consolidated their gains in the middle overs while the hosts struggled to break through. When Willis Cliffe was introduced in the 32nd over, KK. Parekh launched him for six to bring up his half-century. By then, the batsmen had cruised to 149. Akhtar and KK. Parekh enjoyed more than a few reprieves in their first wicket partnership of 158 as the weather took its toll on the fielding. However, the opening stand was finally broken by Adrian Willmington who bowled KK. Parekh on 59 in the 33rd over.

In at number three, Umair Aziz kept the visitors on the front foot as he found the gap and pushed the field in his proactive style. After hours of splendid strokeplay, Akhtar completed his hundred with a thick edge over third man. He retired shortly after and Ellerslie started hitting out in the last five overs while Willmington exploited the aggression to take three more wickets. Alex Noon ensured that his side finished well by middling Willmington straight down the ground to conclude on 224/5. After lunch, Phil Gandy and Dom Hayton opened the chase against the complementary pair of Finlay Traynor and Usman Aziz. Their batting was not lacking in caution, though Ellerslie managed to dig the wickets out.

Traynor set the tone when he rattled Gandy’s stumps in the 9th over with the scoreboard on 25. From the other end, Usman was as frugal as ever bowling four maiden overs in a row to achieve an incredible economy of 1.65 from his 9 overs. Webb brought Vivek Parekh on to bowl the 13th over and multiplied Ruddington’s woes. Thanks to Noon’s impeccable wicketkeeping, V. Parekh dismissed captain Ash Roberts on 13 to close a miserly spell of 5 overs that cost 8 runs and kept the scoreboard on 49/2 in the 21st over. As Simon Frampton joined him in the middle, Hayton accelerated the innings with a couple of sixes at Webb’s expense. But, Webb struck back soon enough bowling Frampton on 14 in the 27th over and the hosts slipped to 92/3 with Hayton on 49.

Asif Ahmed was in next and he looked quick between the wickets until V. Parekh ran him out on 16. Two balls later, Kelvin Rathore bowled Lond for nought. Having held the chase together for 34 overs, Hayton departed on 70 as Noon demonstrated his infallibility behind the stumps once again. Naheem did well to delay the inevitable, but he was undone by a sharp throw from Umair. Then, Traynor came back to wrap up the innings by dismissing Derry LBW before Laura Wilson took a clean catch to bowl Ruddington out on 169 and win the match by 65 runs in the 43rd over.

As they stand sixth in the league table after this thumping victory, the 3rd XI must be eager to visit Chilwell next Saturday.
