George Astbury was one of the early members of Ely City Hockey Club and played an integral part in running the club over many years and growing the club to what it is today.
From player, umpire, to President George was well respected and liked by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His friendly, approachable character guaranteed good company at the bar after a match. One of George’s last actions before standing down as president was to introduce the Astbury Cup, the president’s award to someone who has contributed significantly to the club, showing commitment, dedication, and sportsmanship. The qualities George had in abundance. George will be sorely missed.
