Enfield Borough v Wormley Rovers

MATCH REPORT
Enfield Borough 2 Wormley Rovers 3

The frustration within Enfield Borough grows ever greater after the team needlessly threw away a winning position on Tuesday evening. On a sombre night where a minute’s silence in respect of the late Queen Elizabeth II was held prior to kick off, the miserable weather reflected the mood of the home team at the end of this entertaining encounter.

The line-up reverted to a more familiar look after last week’s League Cup exit at Barkingside. Joe Parker, Kalan Rock, Craig Nelson, Walid Hirsi and 16 year old debutant Kombe Kawimde replaced Dragos Stefanoaica, Albion Begaj, Jaden Stephenson, Mitchell Goddard and Jonas Borges. The visitors had the first chance when a foul by Waiel Hassan resulted in a free-kick twenty five yards from goal but Ryan Wade dragged his shot wide of the target. Hirsi replied with a curling shot from outside the box that was pushed around the post by the fingertips of keeper Reece Grundy. But the first goal was not delayed for long as from a Wormley corner, Mason Oakley rose to head the ball firmly past Parker and into the net. The keeper had to be sharply off his line twice in quick succession to foil Jonah Evans, who created further problems with a ball inside Rock which Luke Marshall collected but the full back’s low centre flew across the face of the goal without anyone being able to apply the vital touch.

Enfield had another opportunity when Rinidie Lokilo turned his man to leave himself with only the keeper to beat but the striker was unable to get full control of the ball and Grundy dived bravely at his feet. Lokilo then turned creator when he pounced on a poor pass out by the keeper to provide Hirsi with an opening but while his strike was good, it was a nice height for Grundy to parry. Adam Al-Asfii tried his luck from distance without success before Darral Wopara and Evans were booked for a skirmish off the ball. Georgi Steed was sent tumbling in the corner of the penalty box by Danny Haigh but the referee waved play on and Hirsi’s long range shot was dealt with by Grundy as the half drew to a close.

Enfield were back on level terms three minutes after play resumed. Al-Asfii’s chip into the goalmouth was intended for Lokilo until Haigh got his head to it, but the ball fell perfectly for Steed who volleyed it past Grundy. The hosts now took control of proceedings. Wopara’s free-kick from twenty yards required Grundy to tip it over the bar, but just before the hour mark Enfield were gifted a great chance to take the lead. A corner kick into the heart of the box was handled in the goalmouth, resulting in the award of a penalty which Steed calmly dispatched. Another goal now would surely have sealed the victory and Enfield went in search of this. Al-Asfii won possession in midfield and played the ball out to Steed on the left before it was transferred into the box where Hirsi tried to find a team mate instead of taking a shot. But Wormley were still in the contest and Parker was forced into three saves in quick succession to foil Jeremy Ebelele twice and Louie Offer.

Play was now switching from end-to-end in rapid succession. Craig Nelson’s deep cross seemed destined to provide the unmarked Steed with his hat-trick, but his header drew a fine reaction save from Grundy. This was countered when Craig Tolley’s centre was met by Offer who failed to find the target. But with fifteen minutes to go Dan Bolden laid the ball off to a team mate before making a run into the Borough box that was not picked up and having received a return pass he rifled the ball past Parker for the equaliser. Wopara appeared to have replied just a minute later when he controlled the ball with his back to goal, turned and fired past Grundy, but the assistant referee had his flag raised for offside. Oakley missed a chance for the visitors when he shot while falling backwards with the ball clearing the crossbar, but with two minutes of normal time remaining Borough lost possession trying to play out from the back. The ball was taken up the right wing before being cut back to the unmarked Sajid Azis on the edge of the penalty box. His shot lacked power, but the wet ball slipped through the hands of Parker and nestled in the back of the net.

Borough return to action on Saturday with a visit to St Margaretsbury, ko 3pm.

Team; Parker, Kawimde, Rock, Al-Asfii, Hassan, Soile, Nelson, Wopara, Lokilo (Finlayter-Lynch), Hirsi, Steed.
