SAM BARNES CALLS TIME ON RUGBY AS THREES DELIVER CONFIDENT PERFORMANCE

Sam Barnes has been playing rugby at Enfield Ignatians for 15 years, but the diligent club servant has decided to hang up his rugby boots for personal reasons in the wake of the victory over visiting Black Horse.

Handed the captain’s armband for the occasions, he said: “A combination of family, work and injury reasons have forced me [reluctantly} to give up the game, but it has been very enjoyable and great fun.”

As swansongs go, this proved to be a perfect platform as regards bowing out, although a biting wind and rain made for awful playing conditions. Not that the mighty Threes ever batted an eyelid. They simply got on with the job and secured their four try haul via Jack Wilson, Dave French, John Georgiou and Alex Bucknall.

The latter score was particularly memorable as it was the legacy of a turbo charge from South African Johan (family name not supplied). Now there’s a ‘Bok’ with a real spring in his step!

SB did his bit by converting two and he unluckily hit the woodwork with another of his attempts.

Although the league is beyond them, Steve Renny has clear objectives. A third or fourth place is still within reach, and they also have a Plate semi-final cup game against Biggleswade IIs lined up, so plenty still to play for.
