The Enfield Ignatians U13s will retreat in very good order following a very positive three days which began at the Eton Manor (Wanstead) festival, which they experienced on Friday evening (May 21). This was followed by a successful return trip to Wanstead on Sunday, writes Steve Baldwin.
Braving the weather and the traffic, where Eton Manor’s 4G pitch awaited them, the visiting blue and golds were involved in a four way
festival involving the hosts, Hackney and Bancroft.
The evening proved to be a big success with the U13s recording a draw and win in the initial two games, having shared the spoils with Hackney 3-3 in the opener, before romping their way to a 6-1 victory over Eton Manor.
Ignatians only narrowly lost their third game to Bancroft 3-1 but lost no caste in defeat.
Still, it proved a great evening and it set the team up nicely for a return trip to Wanstead on Sunday, and they certainly hit the ground after forging a 6-3 half-time lead.
However, any notions that it was in the bag were given short shrift as a great fightback by Wanstead enabled them to trim the deficit to a solitary try after crossing the line with around five minutes to go.
Clearly, Ignatians are made of stern stuff as they responded in the best possible fashion with a try of their own to carry the day 9-7.
It has been a productive few weeks for the team following a landslide win against Watford, and a close defeat against Epping Upper Clapton at their Donkey Lane fiefdom.
Steve Baldwin said: “It’s was great way to finish off at the weekend, and this part of the season for this group of players. The team will now take a summer break ahead of pre-season in July.”
